XD refers to the entire XD line which includes barrel lengths of 3", 4", and 5" with both compact and fullsize grips. XD Service refers only to the 4" model with a full size grip. The XD line is different from the XDm line and the XDs line of pistols. Hope this clears things up for you. If you still have questions try visiting the Springfield website.

 

Is there a difference between the 4" xd and the xd service model?

 

They are the same thing. The Service model is the designator for the 4" barrel model. The Tactical is the designator for the 5" barrel model.

Oh ok. Only difference I see is the service has full grip and the xd45 has compact grip.

 

There is also the Xd 45 service compact. Just a chopped grip with 4" barrel, same as service model otherwise.

 

Correct me if I am wrong, but I think the service model is the only XD that you can get with a manual safety. I have the service model in .45acp with the manual safety.
