I smell a caliber debate.
It's no different than how people are. There are some with big ones, some with little ones, some with all different sizes in between.
There are those who are happy with what they have (content)
Those who are full of pride and like to show off (arrogant)
Those that want a little "reassurance" of something big in their life (insecure)
Those that know how to use it regardless of size (competent)
Those that think size overrides skill (ignorant)
Those that think it's all about how many they have (paranoid)
... and the list goes on.

I started a poll a while back to see which caliber was most commonly carried; .45 acp was the winner, by far. Mostly because it makes big holes in BG's. Most people who voted for .45acp felt confident that one or two well placed shots with good knock-down power are better than 15 or more shots that contain less force.
This poll also took into consideration those folks who are limited to 10 rounds in any case. So, those who claim more capacity is the reason to go with 9mm are negated by those who have to conform to the same capacity with all calibers regardless.
Me personally, however, I use makarov (9x18), simply because my .45acp tac. is too big to have sliding around my trunk; I don't have a permit, so I don't carry. Basically, my PA-63 is the only gun I have that fits easily in my trunk.
I don't know why there's a smiley face where an 8 should be; I can't get it to go away.

the first time i shot my S.A.1911,i understood why a lot of people will only carry a .45 for self defense...
Very good, effective ballistics and very manageable recoil.
In my opinion, 40s&w is tougher for follow-up sight capture - too much muzzle flip.

The reason that I carry a .45 ACP is because I firmly believe that the odds are stacked that if I have to shoot to kill to defend myself, it will be against someone of significant size or muscle mass, and probably armed themselves with a low caliber junk gun.
I prefer them dead with one shot.

well in court it looks bad if you unload a mag on a BG but 5 45's will leave me with 8 in the mag and a BG will 5 huge holes in him
Hollowpoints have a problem occasionally...the cavity gets filled with clothing fibers and the bullet fails to expand and acts like an FMJ. 9mms have a very "pointy" bullet. When they fail to expand they leave a very small hole and tend to push tissue and veins/arteries aside rather than cut or tear them.
I live in a state where we have cold weather. If you look at videos of robberies, you will also see that the BGs often wear coats or jackets regardless of the weather. So the odds of me having to shoot through heavy clothing in the event of a self-defense shooting situation are high. I carry a 45 against the possibility that I will fail to get expansion. The blunt, wide 45 bullet will do more damage as a solid than a 9 or 40.
Another important consideration is muzzle flash. Most self-defense shootings take place in low-light situations and muzzle flash can be a critical tactical component. Less is better and the 45 has the least of any of the usual carry cartridges.

I carry my XD45C for concealment, my XD40SC for deep concealment, and my S&W 642 as a BUG occasionally. I don't feel under powered or out gunned with any of the three.

A .22 will do with a well placed shot but a .45 leaves more room for error :mrgreen:.

Well I carry a 45 because that was what I grew up with. My Dad was a big fan and I picked it up from him. But I also carry a 9mm at times.
But as for the 9mm vs 45.....All I have to say is that anyone that thinks the 45 is so much better then the 9mm that it's not even a contest...has their head pushed up in their arse. Ball ammo aside, a 9mm with modern defense ammo can stand side by side with any 45.

IF a JHP of any service round, from 9mm up, expands then there is little diff. between calibers. I like to plan for the bullet failure, & as has been said, the 45 will always be at least 45cal. The 9mm guys like to rant about mag. cap but in states like Kalif., I'm limited to 10, might as well be the biggest 10 I can carry.:mrgreen:

45 ACP is good for personnel defense, but out in the woods with wild animals, the 44 mag, 454 Casull, and the 50 cal. Smith & Wesson stuff is designed to stop animals. So 45 ACP is no where near "the biggest."
But it's a good caliber for defense against humans. I do suscribe to the large, heavy, big diameter bullet efficacy theory.

IMO, I don't think there's really a 'better' option when dealing with the 9/45 debate. Both have their advantages as well as drawbacks, and both are combat-proven badass rounds.

I just chose it after testing a a few guns for overall comfort & firing characteristics first and figured - if I only had the cash for one, which one would I walk out with today? When I get the chance, I certainly intend to add a nice 9 to the stack and alternate between the 2 for CCW.

Not sure, size doesnt matter to me in the Self Defense field, well I dont want a .22..
I'd feel safe carrying a .380..... My 9 is good too, a hollow point will lay someone down if it comes out a .45 or a 9mm or a 40 or a .357 and in some cases, a .22
