Considering this as a way to more quickly, visibly discern caliber.
Great Idea Caliber ID......I use China Markers...Everyone can do China Markers. Not quite as long lasting in some areas as the paints, I've used those too, but you can brush it out and change colors in minutes and easily fix mistakes. I like the Color Code Caliber Idea. Nice;)

I have used nail polish and Tester's enamels in the past for coloring. I found the nail polish lasts much longer than the Tester's as I like to put a very light coat of oil on my guns while they are in the safe and when I go to the range, I wipe them down. I have found that the oil will cause the Tester's color filled letters to rub off while the nail polish stays put.

Here's another video showing yet another method for this rather cool mod:

After the first 2 minutes max there's not much more to see in the "how to" category but still informative. The biggest advantage is using a hard squeegee while the paint is still wet---it would tend to not drag the paint out of the engraving as anything fabric would. He's basically wiping across the surface of the part without disturbing the paint inside the recesses-----shop rags, paper towels would grab and pull the paint out due the property or cohesion if we want a technical term. :)

I like this video mostly because its very similar to how my dad did this back in the late 50's early 60's on plastic models. He got so good at it friends would bring their projects by for his magic touch. :)

I do something similar on my black impact sockets that are hard to read. I brushed over the size markings with white nail polish, then wipe it lightly with nail polish remover to get it off of the surface of the sockets. Looks good and durable.

So I went ahead and gave this Crayon filling a go.
