Mine come off after the two retention screws are removed. The grips can adhere to the frame pretty well though. I've always been able to get them to come off with a little prying. Please, no use of knifes, nail clippers, blowtorches or concealable nuclear devices as all will marr the finish of that fine weapon.

 

it looks like mine allen screws go into a nother setup of screws that hold the grip. i thought it was a washer at first but then noticed it had a 3 and 9 o'clock notch. i got a screw driver and was able to get one off. as it did that, the grip came off the frame. unfortunately, the three other inner screws as i'll call them, won't come off. i might have softened up the edges of the notches trying to get thme off. Not sure what to do now. anyways, still looking for advice. i'll post some pics.

 

You sure you are not talking about the bushings? Those have the notches you are talking about and are not supposed to come out to get the grip off. Here's the bushings if you scroll down:

that's all i needed to know. i wasn't sure if those had to come out. with what you are telling me, my grips are just wedged on tight. i'll try using something to push them out from the magwell as not to ruin the finish. be right back...

that's exactly what it was. the grips were on there really tight. i was able to pop one off and then i just needed to tap the other off with a punch. i'm putting on my new grips now and will post a pic soon.

i remember another XD'r that put punisher grips on his stainless 1911. i thought it looked cool so i tried it on my packerized loaded. the only thing i don't like about it is that they are really thick. i might end up going aluminum custom engraved grips. found this sight http://www.alumagrips.com. they even cut out different magwell setups for you. i ordered the wilson.

alumagrips will precut the grip so it can take this style. i thought that was pretty neat. they also have a great website so you can see what your gun will look like with the grips you customize.

 

Ah...the Punisher grips! Did you get those off of eBay?

yeah, ebay. they seel 1/16th or 1/8th thicker than the stock grips. i think i'll keep them for a bit and see how they work. my hands are giant like so it will depend on how i shoot with it.

i do like the overall look though and once i get the magwell, it will look closer to a trp model. i'll post that when i get them on.

there was a online custom grip guy who make an amazing punisher set. wood grips with an inlayed metal skull. but he is so backed up, he said 6 to 9 months. haha. too long for me.

just shot it this past weekend and although i thought the grip was too thick, i actually ended up liking it better than the stock grips. being that the stock grip is based on a single stack design and my favorite gun, the XD, is based on a double stack design, i found out that the thick grips sort of gives my 1911 an XD feel. the grips are closer to being round and flat ovals.

I was pleasantly suprised that i ended up being a little bit more accurate with it. the closer to round grip make my trigger finger have less influence on the movement of the barrel and my grip feels much more neutral.

With that said, I really like my new grips....

 

As stated, here is the updated picture with the wilson magwell. i think less the guide rod components and barrel, this thing is getting close to being a serious 1911. a few more upgrades will change that.
