XDS Taking another look

I bought one of the originals when they first came out. I really wanted to like this gun, I shot it pretty well for short periods, but that grenade texture left my hand looking like I was fighting a waffle iron. I became disillusioned in short order and ultimately sent it down the road.

I'm generally a Glock guy and my 26 or 27 are with me most all the time. I want to find another smaller .45 for carry during cooler months. I shoot the G 30 very well, but with some back issues and pending surgery to correct that, I find the 30 a bit too thick and weighty. I've tried the Shield 45, and I find it to be a great gun as well, but it just didn't stick.

Since picking up a steal on an XD.45, I began to consider trying the XDs .45 once again. The other day I found an XDs with case, 5 mags, and a holster for about $400. I'm not sure if it's a newer version or older, but I'm thinking it might be a decent choice. With the availability of Talon grips, which should provide good grip while reducing the course feel of the grenade texture, an XDs might just work out. Anything I should look at or should consider on this gun before I try and bring it home? Thanks

I had a 9mm xds when they first came out. For some reason that I can’t remember I traded it off for a Walter pps. That was a long time ago and since then I have not spent time and money looking for the perfect carry gun. I traded a Ruger 10/22 for my son’s xds 45. I’ve shot it and it’s not going anywhere. I wish you well on your quest.

Make sure the grip safety has a visible roll pin in it.

I put Talon grips on mine, and it made a world of difference. The Gen 2 doesn’t have that tank tread grip texture, though.

I bought my XDs .45 about seven years ago. I have tried (and bought) several pistols since then with consideration of replacing the XDs as the EDC..... but, I keep coming back to it. Let's face it, where can you get a .45 ACP round in a gun that is only .9" wide?? It just covers all of the important things that I consider with a carry gun. Oh, and yes, I put Talon grips on mine and it did ease the bite just a tad.

As the story went in my other thread, got to the party too late. Someone bought it Saturday.

There was another XDs there, but it was a 9mm. Don't need another small 9mm right now. POOP!

I wrapped my grip in hockey stick tape to keep it from peeling the skin of my hands, but mine is an xd-s 40 in 3.3" And I tend to shoot 180gn out of it

I bought an xds .45 8 years ago and at first the grip was chewing up my hand. Someone on this forum recommended using a bicycle inner tube. I cut a piece out of an old inner tube and stretched it over the grip (not the grip safety) and it made a huge difference. Still my EDC.

I took a look at the XDS 9 this afternoon. Nice gun in great shape, and while everyone is looking for more slender guns for carry, I found this one almost too slender for my liking. It just didn't feel right. Just a little more girth would be better.

Please know that this is not a criticism but I don't think I have ever heard of anyone saying a potential EDC gun was "too slender."

No offense taken here. I generally carry a Glock 27 or 26 and find they fit me fine. In fact, I'm carrying an XD45 as we speak. The XDs9 just didn't sit in the meaty part of my hand. It was worth a shot.

My XDS isn't as comfortable to hold as my XDM; I agree with you--the width is a bit too narrow. All three of my pistols (2 x XDM, 1 x XDS) have the same grip texture which I do not mind at all. Personal preference...everybody's different. As they said above, the texture on the 2.0 is different.

If I didn't EDC in a Sneaky Pete holster, I wouldn't have bought the XDS. I'd have preferred to carry the XDM Compact, but Pete doesn't make a holster for it. My main consideration on carrying is I don't want it inside my waistband, and I don't want to open carry either. (I don't want any snowflakes to have a freakout in the grocery store.) The overwhelming majority of folks only see a fanny pack, not a holster. The only people to recognize it for what it is so far were gun guys--who are much less likely to have a cow than the general public.

Oddly, the pistol that feels the very best in my hand is the XDM Compact with a pinkie grip on the magazine. The XDM Competition grip is a teeny bit thicker but gives me somewhat tighter groups. Go figure.

I bought the XDS 3.3 in 9mm when it first came out. I liked it a lot and decided to buy the same thing in 45ACP. As others have said, it chewed up my hand because of the texture of the grip. It's not a fun range gun but as a carry gun it is fine although a 5rd magazine is a bit small for my liking so I use the 7rd magazine.

So the question is, was it an XDs 9 double stack subcompact, or an XD-S 9 single stack? Kind of confusing when two different models can be written the same unintentionally.

I've never heard anyone say an XDs 9 double stack was too narrow.

There is no XDs double stack.

The different XD lines are as follows: XD (double stack), XDM (double stack), XDE (discontinued hammer-fired DA/SA, single stack), and XDS (single stack). Within the XD line they made a double stack subcompact model, but I doubt that it is/was marketed as an "XDS".

It wasn't a dedicated line, it was inconsistent labeling of a specific model. Just like the xd-m was inconsistently labeled as labeled as XD(M), XDM, XD-M, and XD with a superscript M on it. Springfield also did the same with the XD-E, and the XD Subcompact, which is still often referred to as an XDS or XD(S), just like the single stack.
