The loaded chamber indicator has a spring that returns the indicator to be flush with the slide when the chamber is not loaded. With the slide locked back, you should be able to gently lift the indicator and it should return to flush when you release it.

If it does not, it either needs to be cleaned or something inside 'could' be broken. In either case, if it was me, I'd disassemble it to see what was going on inside.

 

And this is why I will NEVER trust a flippy widget to tell me if my weapon is chambered.

Press check: learn it, live it, love it.

 

Maybe it's just me,..... but I seen to always know when my weapon is loaded, indicator or not.

 

Whether you "know" your weapon is loaded or not you still check it. Same if someone were to hand you their weapon. You wouldn't/shouldn't take their word for it nor would you trust the LCI on a gun you've never handled.

A- I know it's loaded when I load it to carry it. I unload it when I return home. The only time it's loaded is when I am out of my home.

B - True enough, I never take someones word that their weapon is unloaded, indicator or not. If you want to show me your pistol, drop the mag and lock it back, then set it down.

 

I use a 5 round mag, ..... lock the slide back, insert mag and 'hit' the slide release, remove the mag. If I can't get another round in the mag, the gun is not loaded.

 

I do a similar thing, except usually I use a charger mag (or "Barney" mag) with a single round loaded...drop the mag, and if it's empty, it's loaded...right?

Except I still do a press check, because sometimes at the range or in training, I don't use a charger, or top off the magazine...so it's something I *always* do. Habit.

If you aren't comfortable taking it apart, you may spray it well with a good cleaning solvent. Then blow it out with compressed air? This might get it cleaned for you.

The indicator may show loaded when it is not. It cannot show empty when it is loaded. It's science.

 

Yes, it can show empty when loaded; basically, the LCI lever breaks and doesn't protrude.

There was at least one thread about this here a few years ago, and I saw the same failure on a different gun (and user) in another forum...

Which goes back to my original statement here: don't trust it. Verify through other means, the press check being the most effective.

Any gun can break, not disputing that.

However, indicator or not, I know when my pistol is loaded. And in my opinion, if you DON'T know when it's loaded, maybe 'you' (generic) shouldn't be trusted with a weapon.

They were both XD/XDm's, of that I am certain.

And it was due to the LCI breaking.

As for the rest...well, you just do as you do, I'll continue my way...if you think double checking one's chamber is showing one shouldn't be trusted with a weapon, I know a few pretty serious professionals that think otherwise.

I'll sooner listen to them.

If I may ask a question without getting crucified for the mere thought of it, on an XDS, is it possible for the LCI to be in the down (unloaded) position on a loaded chamber? If so what would cause that? I see how it could get stuck in the up (loaded) position on an empty chamber.

Yes, it is possible if the part is broken or intentionally modified (there have been a couple of posts in this forum where people have modified the part so it wouldn't stick up, and others where it was apparently broken).

 

Wow his question sure opened a can of worms with you guys. Just like others have said it sounds like there is something stuck under the indicator. If you cannot get it unstuck maybe take it to a local gun smith or send it in. Hopefully you will let us know what it was.

Ok guys, thanks. It appears that the general consensus is that the area of the LCI is probably dirty. I'd like to take it apart and check that. Does anyone know how that's done? Thanks again.


Edited to add- I did a little research on this forum and have discovered that I should remove the LCI pin and check for any dirt or problems etc. I cannot however find a picture of the LCI pin. I am assuming that it is the pin on the top of the slide near the rear of the LCI correct? Is that pin reusable or do I need to buy a new one? And, (last question), does it go right to left to remove and left to right to install? Thanks again.

You need to disassemble and clean the recess that the LCI sits in. Had the same problem. Had a lot of crap under the LCI. Disassemly and reassembly is very easy. Just follow Youtube video on XDS slide disassembly

Should not as far as I know since it no longer show proper configuration. Suggest call Customer Service at SA to find out if is correct or not.

 

Well, I think I discovered why the LCI is not working properly. I watched the video and read everyone's posts and you all were spot on. It works fine now. It was simply dirty.
