Hi,
I am the owner of both pistols.
On the right side of the foto is XDM 2009. and on the left side is XDM 2014. with marked differences.
Who know why they made this changes?

I had to check my 3.8 45 compact bi-tone I bought new about a year ago, and it doesn't look like either one. It's just smooth in that area....

If I had to hazard a guess, I'd say there were concerns about slide strength and possibly some cracking in that area, so they left some metal to brace/reinforce the area.

Looking at the feedramp, I'd say it was widened to enhance reliable feeding of all ammo.

Not an expert or "in the know" person, just a shadetree gunsmith and professional industrial mechanic of nearly 30yrs hazarding a few educated guesses.

It could just be that the machinery or tooling was changed/updated and it created a different geometry in the milling process.
