Greetings all XD-S fan boys...I've been struggling without success to determine the thickness of the XD-S 45 Auto's top of slide to bottom of accessory rail. The pix shows exactly what I'm looking for, the gun is the XD-Mod2 Subcompact in 40S&W. This measurement is 1.7".

Scarpia, my 4" XDS 45 is 1.6 for the dimension you posted in the pic. Hope this helps..

Thanks for the info, much appreciated. I'm planning to add a single stack 45 Auto to my 45 CCW collection. I have XD-Mod 2 Subcompact's in 40S&W and 45Auto. These are really nice shooting guns but, in my hands, they are very top heavy and feel bulky. I only occasionally carry the 40 shown in the picture and seldom carry the 45. The XD-S in 45 is on my RADAR as a CCW in 45 Auto but I don't want another bulky feeling Mod-2. Finding one to put in my hand at a LGS is almost impossible. Every shop around here seems to stock just Glocks. That's why I'm interested in knowing that dimension, 1.6" is only a slight advantage over the Mod-2's 1.7".

BTW, my current subcompact 45 Auto carries are the Shield 45 and Kahr CW45. I've looked at a G36 but found it to be too big for CCW. I might consider a Khar PM45 or CM45. On the other hand, I might just stay with my Glock 27 with 200 grain Speer Gold Dots as it's practically a "45 magnum".

Holster choice?
Well, since the OP replied above yours, no... And not likely in any case as any holster made for the XDs or that lists the XDs as one of the handguns that fit a "once size fits many" would have taken that into account already.

Again, these are nice shooting guns, but they feel like a 2 by 4 with a grip. I replaced the decent factory trigger with the Powder River trigger and spring. I've measured 3.5 lbs. trigger pull and yeah, I know that's very light, but you can unload a magazine of 45 Auto or 40S&W really quick without that final jerk at the stop.

BTW: I purchased the S&W 36 (nickel, 38spl) in 1984 for $212 and never fired the gun. I added the newer rubber grip several years ago. It is truly a locker queen and will remain so.

You are rotating between all several single stack and subcompact 45s you own? That's a 9+1 Mod 2 and G27 and a 6+1 Shield and CW45.

If Kahr made an all steel MK45 or K45, I'd carry that. Right now I EDC a K40. I have owned a Shield 9mm, 40s&w, 45acp, and Shield Plus. The Shield and feel of the 45 Shield is the best IMHO. I put a mag through a friend of mine's XDS 45 several years ago, but didn't like it. I wanted one until I fired his. The Shield is way more softer shooting. I'm not a fan of Glocks, so the G27 was never on my radar.

xd...you are spot on. The Shield's feel the best, I agree. I have no issues with them in any caliber. The CW45 is the reason I'm thinking about the XD-S. I've had nothing but issues with the CW45. It refused to go into battery without that extra push. I reduced the extractor spring force but taking about 0.02" off the spring rod. I won't settle for less than 100% reliability. I then upped the main recoil spring to 20 lbs. that too has helped. Lastly, I went to a higher charge of Power Pistol in my reloads. Pulling the trigger on the CW45 is like a mini nuke blast. Last range session was close to 100%.

My G27 is my only Glock. If Gaston made a 45 in the G27 frame, I'd be all over it, likewise my ideal gun is Kahr K45. I have it direct from Kahr CS there are no plans for a MK45 nor a K45. K40? I have the K40 Covert, that's a large slide on the MK40's small frame. I've only put a few rounds through it so it's not yet in the carry rotation.

I know what you mean about wanting the XD-S until you actually fired one. I had the same experience with a motorcycle. I lusted over a Honda Magna until I managed to test ride one. I didn't get into high gear before I decided there's no way I'd ride one of these things. Likewise, I fired my neighbor's SA P365, no thanks. That's why I asked about the dimension of the XD-S's muzzle. I don't want to spend the bucks for another 2 by 4 with a grip.

That helped getting the slide to snap the extractor's claw over the rim. It seemed to have helped but not 100%. I won't settle for less than 100% reliability. I then upped the main recoil spring to 20 lbs. so the slide will slam the claw home easier, that too has helped.
The extractor isn’t supposed to snap over the rim, the rim is supposed to slide under the extractor from the magazine. Dropping a round into the chamber and releasing the slide will eventually break the extractor.

Yeah, you're correct in that, but I do have some guns that snap the extractor's claw over the rim. The Kahr's don't. By reducing the extractor's spring pressure against the claw does make the brass's rim easier to slip under the claw when chambering. The rim does engage the claw on its way up from the magazine.

The .45 XD-S in either generation remains an excellent CCW piece, IMO.
