I'm thinking of getting a tactical 9mm. I currently have a 9mm 4" model, well it's my wifes. We bought it for her, she picked it out, but I thought that she wouldn't really shoot it and it would become mine. I was wrong. She loves it and I can't touch it.

But my question is this: I've seen some 17rd mags out there for the XD. Who makes these, and are they reliable? And also are the 32rd Promag mags reliable also?

I'm buying this as a range/fun gun and a shtf gun. I just wanted to have a handgun that had ability to accept mags that held that many rounds. But I want to know if they're reliable and worth it or not.

I would if I could, but why do you need the super high cap magazines? Isn't getting 2 of the 15 rounders enough? You could get a current high cap mag made for the .40 and with a slight "tweak" of the mag lips, you can turn a .40 mag into a "super high cap" but is stuffing a few extra rounds worth it?
Have you thought about the sub compact? I hear there are some nice package deals out with a holster and everything. :p

Good luck, shoot safe and keep learning as much as you can.

The 17 round magazines are probably converted magazines, originally intended for Beretta 92s, they have an additional slot cut into them to make them work in an XD. People have reported that they are not entirely reliable. Same for the super hi-caps. For your best shot (pun intended :) ) at complete reliabilty, stick to factory mags.

iirc Promag had 17 rd 9mm mags, but they suck for reliability.

Thanks for the info. I figured that aftermarket mags probably wouldn't be reliable since that's the case for most handguns, but I didn't know about the XD.

As far as my reasoning for wanting that capability, it's just something that I wanted. I've been shooting for a while and have a few guns, but I just wanted a 9mm that had the capability to accept higher capacity mags. I'm not paranoid or anything, I just wanted a setup where if anything really bad ever happened I'd have the ability to have much more rounds available in one mag, and ample rounds in reloads.

I like the SC, but I've already got a couple of carry guns and I think the holster they have in that package is pretty worthless anyway. Thanks.

See, I knew I'd get one of those. That's okay though. When the zombies are knocking at your door you'll wish you listened!!

I have 17 round mags from Springfield for the 9mm. They are actualy converted Beretta 92 Mags and they stick out past the grip a bit. The problem with these is that if you slam them into the gun they can damage the extractor and ejector of the gun. Not a good thing. I am trying to find a extension to prevent this but have yet to find one.

Also my local range has soem 25 round Taurus 92 mags for $12 right now. It should be possible to convert them the same way the Beretta 92 mags were. I may have to buy them and see f I can fix them up.
