ok... i got some money saved up so i'm going to start building an AR.

first question is...

what is the difference between these :

sound suppressor
flash suppressor
muzzle break
compensator

(the sound and flash suppressor are obvious, but just for comparison sake...)

second question...

where is a good place (besides AR15.com) to get an upper reciever?

last question....

DPMS is the most common (brand?) that comes up when i search for AR components, do they make quality stuff?

EDIT: CRAP i thought i was in the NON-XD talk forum.... sory for that

Ok...

Sound Suppressor- a device used to reduce the muzzle blast, muzzle blase causes the most of the noise when a gun is fired
Flash Suppressor- device fitted onto the rifle to reduce muzzle flash
Muzzle Break- a device fitted over the end of the barrel to reduce recoil
Compensator- much like a muzzle break a compensator will reduce muzzle flip, where the muzzle break reduces recoil

there ya go.. hope that helps. I will search around and post back where ya can get some decent prices on these items.

cool... thanks a lot, thats exactly what i was looking for.

so the most practical for everyday shooting would probably be a compensator...

also...

what is that knob sticking out in between the forward assist and the dust cover?

as apposed to this...

i know one is an A2 and one is an A3 but besides that what is the (knob?) sticking out in between the forward assist and the dust cover?

Just spend the $800 and buy a complete Bushmaster..tack driver out of the box, chrome lined bore and chamber, virtually no break in. 1/9 twist, and get the A3 carry handle for adding toys.
i thought about that, but i can build one of better qualitiy for cheeper.... and get the added benifit of the experience.

the bump, as stated is a brass deflector.
it is there because the millitary ask for it. they found that left handed shooters would eat a lot of brass and because it was not on there approved diet, they wanted the bump to deflect the brass away from the shooters face so they would be forced to stick to there diet

Note: A "Compensator" is nice to help keep recoil to a minimum, but they make your gun VERY LOUD. I find them irritating. Anyone shooting next to you will too.

Most just get a flash suppressor. They look cool and don't make your gun loud. The .223 round that the AR shoots does not have much recoil anyways. So there's really not much need for a compensator.
