Hey all,

I wanted to point this out in just one thread. Everyone that is posting pics of their guns may want to look at the pics and re-touch.

I am seeing lots of pics with serial numbers that are visible. Call me paranoid, but I don't like posting serial numbers of my stuff for the entire world to see.

You guys may just want to think about retouching photos if the S/N is visible.

I have yet to hear one single reason why showing your serial number will cause you any grief. If you pull a twenty dollar bill out your pocket and show me the serial number I can do as much with that as I can with the serial number of your gun. Nothing.

US961172 I think.. I have no problem with the serial number of my pistol being shown.. If it is ever used in a crime, it wont be by me.. if it is ever stolen, or misused.. I would like to know where it is, and how it is being abused so that I can get it back!

No fear here.

Call me cynical, but with the way identity theft has become such a big problem, what is to prevent some miscreant from taking your serial number and reporting it as stolen, claiming it was his gun? There are many, many unscrupulous people out there, and some are always looking for some scam to run. It just makes sense to keep as much of your personal information to yourself, and serial numbers of firearms are one of those personal things. Even when you're able to prove you were the original purchaser of your gun, why subject yourself to the headache?

DanaT, you're on the money with your advice.

That may be true, but I've got a bill of sale and a dealers form #4473 saying I own it.

I am sure someone wanting to go throught the trouble can go and forge one of his own. I wonder what the ATF would do if a gun becomes claimed by two diffrent people? The forms are easily obtained by a determined person and they are not allowed to keep records. If the form at the dealer is the only record for you what is to stop crooked people from faking forms elsewhere.

For me.. My life is an open book. Not too much trouble can come from it.. I have a website, which you can easily find out what it is by right clicking on any picture I post... that will lead you to my employer.. and if you are really interested, you can do a "whois" search and find out my exact address, and phone number... I would save you the time and just tell you...

The serial number on my gun was logged when I purchased it.. along with a background check. The government is already fully aware, and have a print of a bullet that has been fired from the pistol before I ever saw it. This pistol will never be used in a crime as long as I posess it...

If it is stolen, which I hope it never is... I will report it immediatly. I cant go to jail, I am to purdy...

as for my serial number, my handgunis registered with the city per their ordinance, so that is not a problem proving ownership

I agree with both sides actually. There is no need to post it, but if you do, i dont think much can be done with it

we've had this debate before. i choose to not give out such info just as a general s.o.p. mindset, and there's nothing to gain. also, if a gov. agency was to monitor this board they could i.d. you with your pistola's s.n.

who knows what tomorrow may bring, things change, but info can't be taken back.

you want paranoid? what if a renagade cia group needed a patsy for a domestic hit, say a senator. they read this forum, find a edgey local poster from the senator's home state that fits the profile of a loose lipped, can't keep a secret, rattles to anger easily, hot head. [not that i'm saying we have such people on this board.]
they could manuver that person into having no alibi during the hit, maybe even using the person's pistol. they know the person's i.d., address, etc. from your pistols sn which the person posted here for no good reason.
hmmm........., might make a good story for a book.

closer to home, and perhaps more believeable, what if you piss off a LEO here and he has a friend on the force of your local dept.?
don't you people WATCH T.V.?
