"The 230 grain 45 GAP offerings from Winchester give you the exact same ballistics as their loadings of the mighty 45 ACP. That's right - exact same bullet, exact same velocity and exact same performance. Best of all, the shorter overall cartridge length of the 45 GAP allows it to be chambered in the exact same Springfield Armory XD frame used for the 9mm and the 40 S&W pistols."

What exactly are they saying in the bold text?

Would be awesome if they made a conversion barrel for the .40 to fit the 45 GAP....4 guns in one :)

Basically they're saying that because the 45 GAP casing is shorter in length than a 45 ACP, guns can be modified slightly to fire the cartridge.

Comparison: The .45 GAP (top) side-by-side with the S&W .40 Glock 22
along with .40 S&W, .45 GAP, and .45 ACP cartridges.

"The case length of the .45 G.A.P. is 0.76" as opposed to 0.89" for the .45 ACP. In metrics, this translates to 19mm vs. 22mm. By contrast, the .40 auto case measures 0.85", or 21.5mm in length. With its 200-grain JHP bullet, the overall length (OAL) of the.45 G.A.P. cartridge is 1.08", slightly shorter than either the 9mm or the .40 auto in most of its loadings. "

The 45 GAP XD is even mentioned in the lower portion of the article with positive remarks from the author.

As I understand it, SA is already working on (selling?) an XD in .45 GAP. If so, it's only a matter of time before EFK or someone else starts selling the conversion.
Springfield has an ad for the XD .45 GAP with a box of winchester ammo and holster in the new American Rifleman.

Won't they be selling conversion barrels to convert the 45GAP to the other calibers, not the other way around? The hole in the slide of the current models will be too small for a 45GAP barrel, won't it?

Converting a .40 to 45 GAP will be more involved than simply changing barrels. The head of the 45 GAP is significantly lager than the .40 S&W so you'd need another slide along with another barrel. I don't think it would be possible.

What are they saying that springgfield isnt going to make a 45 acp any time soon
I was at Whittakerguns in West Louisville, Ky. the other day and they said the Springfield is coming out with a .45 acp next year. Now I don't know if this is true or not, but I just
1. Hope that it is true and
2. Hope that the grip size doesn't get larger.

I held a 12 round Taurus .45 acp 24/7 model the other day when I was at Whittaker's and the grip fit my hand as well as my XD's do. So if Taurus can make a double stack .45 to fit people like me with small hands, then Springfield can to.

Have shot a certain Instructors test G37 with available factory ammo then {ca. 6/04} and was less than impressed. Even with Glock's "famous" frame-flex the gun snapped in recoil. THe G21 have been shooting for years is Superb in comparison!

This cartridge may wind up being a success or the kind of success the .357 SIG wound up being? Very Probably was/is aimed at the LE market as it allows more {and smaller} hand sizes to fit its "9mm size" frame.

I never thought of that!!!! I want one!!! I wonder when or if they will come out with the conversion barrel?
I do not think that would be possible. I am sure there would be problems for the 40 slide to handle a .45 GAP load. I am sure if you buy the 45 GAP XD though that it would be possible to convert down to a 40, just need someone to make the conversion. :D I have seen the GAP gun here in WA, I think it was at the last gunshow I was at. DId not ask to look at it as I am not the least bit interested. XD-9 is fine for me.
