What kind of 5.56 does the military use? Is it different with each branch? Do they just use 55 grain ball or some of the heavier stuff?

What do some of you guys like?

The Army used to use 55-grain bullets in the older M16A1's, with a 1-in-12 twist if I remember right. Went to the heavier 62 grain SS-109's with the M16A2's, with a 1-in-7 twist, mainly to ensure penetration of Warsaw Pact body armor back in the 80's. I'm not sure what they're using now, but I've heard they've had lots of problems in Iraq with those steel-core penetrator rounds in close combat blowing through BG's without stopping them.

The A1/A2 switch screwed me up a bit. I did my first 5-year stint shooting an A1 the whole time, got out for a while and went back in and had to relearn how to qualify at the range - the A2's have a very different trajectory and it took me a while to figure out why I kept missing the 150m and 200m targets...
