ok so i just got a new upper and it was sold as a CMMG but first thing the bolt is a colt bolt(not complaining there) and then i noticed a weird marking on the upper that my other cmmg upper doesnt have (i got it directly from CMMG)

Its the forging mark. Keyhole means CERRO FORGE.
Cerro forge marks have been seen on COLT, dpms, bushmaster, etc etc etc....
The forger supplies rough forgings to companies that mill the part to spec.

A (splintered) = Anchor Harvey Aluminum

AF = Alcoa Forge

C AF = Colt Alco Forge

C MB = Colt / Mueller Brass

Cardinal (stylized) = Cardinal Forge

CH = Colt Harvey Aluminum

CK = Colt / Kaiser Aluminum

Circle/Crooshairs w/"AR" = ArmaLite

CM = Colt / Martin Marietta

D (stylized) = Diemaco

DK = Diemaco / Kaiser Aluminum

E = Emco

EK = EMCO/Kaiser

E MB = EMCO/Mueller Brass

F keyhole = FNMI / Cerro Forge

FA = FNMI / Anchor Harvey

FK = FNMI / Kaiser Aluminum

FM = FN/Martin Marietta

FMB = FNMI / Mueller Brass

Keyhole = Cerro Forge

L = Lewis Machine & Tool

LK = LAR / Kaiser Aluminum

LM = LAR / Martin Marietta

M (under diamond) = Mueller Industries

PA = Capco / Anchor Harvey

PM = Capco / Martin Marietta

do you know if CMMG ever used them?

this was sold to me as a complete CMMG upper. its not a big deal im just curious

why arent you calling CMMG and asking THEM?
I have a sneaking suspicion that they would know the answer.;)

but the answer to your question is yes. cmmg has used Cerro....i dont know if they currently do.

I have a sneaking suspicion that they would know the answer.;)
because I dont have a phone on me for now. I lent my friend my cell for today and i dont have a landline. im a cell only guy

well now after doing research im 99.9% sure its a cmmg. so i dont really care anymore.
some cmmgs have the key hole some have nothing. but they have an M right above the gas tube. and this came from CMMG on the ar15.com website

It's just a forging mark. Nothing to be worried or upset about.

I've got one on my RRA Entry Tactical LAR15, too.
