WASR 10/63 Owners, I Need Your Help!!!

5566 Views 16 Replies 8 Participants Last post by  TabulaRasa
I currently have a WASR 10/63 on layaway and need to know if the rear sight is adjustable to 800 or 1000 meters. I'm ordering the Krebs peep-sight and need to know before I order! I could always go visit my AK in prison, but I really don't feel like wasting the 60 mile round trip just for that. Thanks!!

I'm fairly certain it's 1,000, but don't expect to be able to get that much out of it.
Just looked at my WASR 10 its 1000 meters.

Since I'm an AK virgin, maybe this will help instead. Is the elevation slider for the 800 and 1000 meter variants the same? I'd never expect 1000m out of a 7.62, or even 800 for that matter. I just need to know since the peep sight uses the slider off the original.
50 yrds is your best bet with that Romanian WASR :???:
1000 meters, and do not pick one for the RPK, even though its 100m also, its different. The 800m is for the mid barrel AKs like the AK-102,104, and 105...

The reason that such large distances is built into the sight leafs on Russian (and some other older military's) guns is for area targets that are too far away to be hit individually.

This is where your platoon (or larger unit) all take aim at something 1km away, with your slider set on 1000m, and starts firing.

With all of you firing at the area, nobody is gonna want to be standing around there.
Alright, it looks like I need to restate my question, so here goes!

I found a peep sight for $44 that looks exactly like the Krebs peep sight, but it is offered only in the 800m version. If the rear sight on my WASR sitting in layaway prison is indeed the 1000m variant, will the elevation slider on the factory 1000m sight fit on the 800m peep sight? Thanks!

Yes, and i'll restate my answer...You have a 1000m site. the 800m site is for the compact AKs. you can use it but you will have to rezero your rifle and the distances may not work out since the distance between the sights are different. All 'sliders' are the same for AKs and SKSs.

RPK-47/74=1000m sights, 20" barrel....will fit an AK47/74 but use of this leaf and you must rezero the rifle, marks won't jive with distance

AK-47/74=1000m sights, 16" barrel

AK-102/104/105=800m sights, 12.5" barrel....will fit an AK47/74 but use of this leaf and you must rezero the rifle, marks won't jive with distance

AKSU 47/74-200/400m sights, 8" barrel. Won't work at all unless you weld it to the top cover...
Thanks for the info. This is what I wanted to hear. As for zeroing the rifle, I doubt Century did that before shipping it to the dealer, so that isn't an issue. I definitely want a peep sight for an improved sight picture, and since this is $44 as opposed to $65 for Krebs, $20 buys almost 100 rounds of 7.62x39 these days.

einheit, do you think it will make a difference throwing an 800m sight on a rifle intended for a 1000m sight? Would the difference be worth the $20 more I would have to spend on the 1000m sight from Krebs?

The sight I'm looking at is http://aa-ok.com/images/product_images/0000/4353/ak191.jpg

Thanks!
Well, I just changed my mind with the whole "peep sight" thing. I've decided to wait until this comes out:
Ruger® 10/22 Rifle - adjustable aperture sights

It's an A1 type of rear sight with adjustable windage and extends the sight radius quite a bit. Looks like a winner to me!
Mojo's revolutionary new MicroClick(TM) sight!!!

MicroClick rear sight and a .150" replaceable aperture. Other apertures (.120" and .090") may be ordered separately--see below.
$59.00

WOW indirect fire with an AK..never thought of that!

Russian 'steam roller' tactics....a rifle is a very small artillery piece. Kinda like archer attacks in the 'days of olde'...

Sounds like the Soviet version of "spray and pray."

Yeah, I thought of that. The only hang-up is I think it's a bit unattractive and bulky. I like the A1/A2 style aperture that can be quickly switched. Since this rifle will see probably 95% of its life within 100m, and maybe the other 5% out to 200m, the need for infinite on-the-fly elevation adjustments isn't necessary for me. I like to keep it simple and would rather rely on the knowledge of the zero range and bullet drop to place my shots. Just my $.02

That, and the Tech Sights option will extend the sight radius and hopefully squeeze a little more accuracy out of it. For the time being, I'll just stick with the factory sight for the time being. I've ordered 1000 rounds of Brown Bear, a new Maadi style synthetic handguard, AK74 brake, 6 poly mags, and other items that I can't think of at the time. I'll wait a while before spending any more $. Besides, I can't let the wife get suspicious. ;-)

Then keep the notch and post and 'learn' to use them......thats what i did...
I was out in S. Dakota in the Badlands last summer. Set the sights on my AK to 800m and started shooting single shots at a distand badland/hill. The terrain out there is a parched clay soil that has a little bit of give when you step on it. I couldn't see the shots landing but when I went to look at the video that night shot with a camcorder @ 40x zoom, you could see dust getting kicked up by the bullet landing.

I even hit approximately what I was aiming for.
