I need your help guys. My cousin has a mil spec 1911 and I used to have a bitone xd 45 that has what looks to be like etchings inside the slide. Looks like initials or a number. Its pretty crude looking, as if done by a handheld drill or something. Now I've had other xds that don't have this. Can anyone explain to me what it is for and maybe why some don't have it?

Pictures would be pretty helpful. I've never heard of that or seen it in any of my 4 XDs.

All XD's have some hand type engraving/etching on the extractors after fitting the engrave/etch part of the serial number. I have also seen some that were on the slides before also. A guess would be the pistol was pulled from the line as a sample or for quality control issues. And after testing or fixing they quickly engraved to show something was done/passed.
