Standard or Loaded M1A?

I'm considering purchasing an SA M1A for my father as a gift. He served in the early to mid 60's. He trained on and used the M-14 exclusively.

So, ideally, I'd like to pick one that is nostalgic looking, yet a good shooter at the same time.

Does anyone have any opinons on whether the Loaded M1A's are worth the money over the standard? We won't be doing any competing, but we want something that's accurate for fun shooting at the range.

I have a Standard and love it
I just asked my Dallas local dealer, and according to them there aren't any to be had (std. or loaded) in North Texas.

I'm on their backorder list. Anyone know of a dealer near Dallas with them in stock?

Dude, just find what you want on Gunbroker.com and have it shipped to your ffl. My local FFL charges $25 flat rate for FFL Transfers and no state tax if the original dealer is not in Texas. Why would you want to pay taxes on a $1500+ gun??????

I hear ya. It's not the I want to pay taxes. It's that my father will be in town soon, and I was hoping to have it on hand to give it to him as a surprise. Shipping may delay things, but it may outweigh the taxes.

We'll see. I guess Springfield goes through production runs. A lot of dealers I've talked to in the DFW area have M1A SOCOM's in stock... just no std or loaded models.

I have the loaded version and really like it. Since I don't shoot it in competition I wish I had gotten the SOCOM version. I feel the shorter barrell is much more practical in a urban enviroment, and it is still is an accurate rifle out to say 600 yards. I'll never shoot at something that far away. Hell I can't see the target at 600 yards.

I have a loaded but I think a standard would be just fine. But its up to you if you want the heavier barrel, nm trigger and sights. Check out Buds. They've been keeping some in stock.
PM me if you have a link for Buds. I'd appreciate it.

If you want him to have one like the soldiers had the get the standard.
If you think he may want to shoot matches or is someone who appreciates an accurate gun, get him the loaded...
Both really. I want something as close to an M-14 as possible, but I would like it to be an accurate shooter. So I'm leaning loaded, but I may opt for a standard if a good deal pops up.

just devils advocate maybe but id recommend a ar10 instead for the money.

i had the loaded and after i shimmed the gas block it was a tackdriver... .75moa with 168fgmm. but i believe mine was exception not the rule and think for many reasons the ar10 trumps it.
By shimming the gas block what does that do, I'm new M1A owner and use to the M16 for my 24 yrs in the service

I've added a Sadlak Airborne mount with a Vortex Viper 6.5-20x50 scope and a Bradley Cheek reset just waiting for the local range to open back up. There's an indoor range that will let me sight it in there which i guess wouldn't be to bad just to get someone close since the range only goes out to 25 yds

Before my local gun club closed, I was inches away from pulling the trigger on the Loaded. Really liked a lot of the upgrades over the standard model.

Unfortunately, no place good to shoot for a while, so........ new purchases off the table. Sad.

I picked up the loaded model back in December and have upgraded it. Put a Sadlak scope mount with a Vortex Viper 6.5-20x50 scope, Bradley Cheek Rest, and a SEI muzzle brake, and a Harris bipod. Only have shot it three times then the range shut down because of the Chinese Flu. They may open this week i hope
