Wife and I just sold our house at a nice profit and she thinks we should treat ourselves some. Normally she's the save first type, but who am I to complain? Considering a Springfield 1903, a M1 Garand or a modern M1A. Any suggestions for one over the other?

1903. It's one of the finest rifles ever made. And they're only gonna get more and more expensive.

I enjoy shooting my M1 as well as my M1A. Much more enjoyable than any AR!

An 03 (Springfield or Rock Island Arsenal) has a short stock. Men were smaller 100 years ago. I'm 6'3" tall and my 03 just beats me to pieces. The stock is so short that I cannot get my right thumb over the top of the stock at the wrist to get a good cheek weld. And the stock beats my cheek up pretty bad. A couple of magazines (5 shots each) and I'm ready to put it back in the case for the year.

The 03A3 (a WW2 modification of the 03 - not 03's brought in and modified, but the modifications made to the parts used to build the 03A3 to make is cheaper and faster to make) has a longer stock and peep sights and is much more pleasant to shoot.

The M1 Garand is my favorite. Still has peep sights and is a semi-auto. My M1 out shoots any other USGI rifle I have except my 03A4 Springfield (a WW2/Korea era sniper version of the 03A3.) It also outshoots my M1A.

The M1A is a nice rifle, just never shot to my satisfaction with the standard type loads safe to shoot in it.

With the bolt action rifles you can shoot any .30-06 ammo off the shelf at Walmart. That isn't true for the M1. It's gas system was designed to fire ammo with a gas port pressure in a certain range.

The M1A is supposed to be okay with .308 ammo but don't use any bullets heavier than 168 grain. Heavier bullets use slower burning powders and that's not good for the gas system/operating rod in it either.
