Some recent Spyderco's...

Taking a break from Coronavirus....

My Spyderco obsession has no diminishment in sight. They're like Glock's, the beauty is in the simplicity and functionality and by and large they're the knives I carry most. Some recent Spydies…

Spyderco Shaman. Love this knife, a big solid compression lock. Easy to take apart and smooth out the internals and now it's just as smooth as can be. The G10 is a bit smoother than I like but one day I may replace them with aftermarket scales. I have the standard version with the S30V metal, Blade HQ had an M390 black DLC blade version with jade scales that I wish I had jumped on.

Spyderco Manix 2 in FDE with M390 steel. The Manix 2 is a great carry knife, in M390 it's got the best steel. The button functions like the Axis lock on a Benchmade. This is a frequent carry knife, everything you could want in a solid carry EDC.

Spyderco Smock. Love the Smock! This is one of the most unique knives out there, it's larger than it looks but quite thin and easy to carry. The knife deploys via the Spydiehole or a top flipper and has a compression lock with a button release. Super smooth action and a really cool knife.

So my coworker just got one a lot like the Smock. It's really thin, and whatever the name... Has the lock like the Benchmade Axis. It seems much more solid, but it also isn't as easy as the BM to close. The BM you just smear, the Spydy is harder, more deliberate. I was cutting cardboard and cut my thumb cleaning it... He keeps cutting himself closing.

Anyhoo... Yes, it is really nice, solid, clean, simple. I see why people like them. I've never been a fan of the hole... But super comfy knife.

3 nice looking blades @Snaphook.

I do not own any Spydercos or blades of M390. However, I could see a Manix 2 making it into my pocket. That could be a 2 birds 1 stone kind of deal. Also, like the Smock.

Unfortunately, I'll have to wait until Md. allows the local knife shop to reopen. Don't believe it is considered an essential business. Granted I could order online, but, with all this CV BS going on I want to support local businesses as much as possible.

I wish we had a decent local knife shop, I'd practically live there. I agree with supporting local when you can.

The Manix 2 is a great knife.

I've thought about getting a sheepsfoot, looks very oractical... That's about as crazy as I get. I've thought about a Tanto to have for what tantos are good at... But I don't want to sharpen it. So pretty much anything that's a pain to sharpen... Recurve, serated, tanto, concave... It's out for me.

Ordered a left-hand para 2. This will be my second spyderco folder after the native 5 LW. I considered the para 3 also, but the left hand compression lock on the para 2 seemed a better fit, and it's not that much heavier. I'll just ditch a few unused keys off my keyring LOL

Received my LH Para 2. It's lighter than I expected but feels really solid. The balance is great, compression lockup perfect, easy to manipulate one handed. Bade centering is perfect and it is really sharp. No play in any direction. It fits my hand perfectly with thumb on blade ramp and all four fingers on the grip, yet I can choke up into the 50/50 choil if I want to.

I love it.

Well... As usual... Stuff posted is stuff I got to look at. Been spending a lot of time looking at spydies... Not a ton of lefties, not a ton of 390... Of all I do like the mantix 2. I'll have to play with my co-workers and see if it grows on me... But honestly, I don't care for the hole, and well... Like Glocks... Doesn't trip my trigger. I'll get back with you in a second...

So I spent some time sharpening my friends Mannix. They still are not really my thing... But again, I really do get it. Very clean. Very simple. Very efficient. That blade is such a slicer... Even scares me.

Then another friend got the same one in S110V. For it being the hardest steel out, I could not tell much difference between that and M390. Very slight. Curious to see how it holds up.

The Mannix is a cool carry knife, I don't carry mine that often but it's still a solid setup and the blade shape is a serious slicer.

I've heard the 110 and Maxamet's are hell to sharpen but I don't have any blades in either steel. M390's I've sharpened several times and they're a beast and take an awful long time to get right, as does 20CV. I'd say the M390 and 20CV's are probably the best steels I own and I believe they're functionally equal, I have 1 M4 on my Mannix, otherwise lots of S35, Elmax, S30, and D2.

So it's now only my Wicked Edge. Even if I wanted to run it on the Work Sharp quickly, it still convexes the edge, so more work to clean up back on wicked edge. The Wicked Edge is simply perfection... And pretty fast.

Having said that... It's a real shame Work Sharp sells the WS... Then the Ken Onion... Which isn't compatible.... And you have to have the KO. Nobody should buy anything other than the KO... And WS should sell the Grinder together... Either buy the guide if you don't want to be bothered, or buy a KO grinder. My friend has a regular WS, and I was trying to show him how to do it well..
And honestly.... Garbage. The KO uses wider belts and a much better guide. The grinder uses even bigger belt and they are not much more expensive... But you get a lot more belt.

What I don't like along with others, is sliding knife on guide and scratching blade. So you have to tape off. The grinder is free hand so no guide or scratches.

The grinder attachment... As well as being a good small grinder for other stuff... But it is much more versatile for knives. Big or small they are all the same on the grinder. No limitations. And again... Do very well with hatchets/axes... Or mower blades... Or machetes... Or chisels

So very worth it.... But they Can't do razors. So if you want to shave with your knives... Then you need stones and a guided system or freehand. And while you might not shave with them... There is nothing like cutting meat or veggies or other stuff with razors. When the knife just sinks in.... Oh... Watch this...

The second video... How to tell if it's sharp... Is what got me to WE. I was getting much better edges with grinder after some study... But still not scarry sharp. Then I saw that video...

First, my knives were not even as sharp as his that were not sharp. More like scrape shaving on my arm... And I'm like... There is no way he is running his fingers down the edge... Yes he is. And when I did mine... Total shock... Ya, they didn't bite in. I could put a "lot" of pressure without getting cut. Total shock. Which lead me to Wicked Edge... And my very first knife off it... Scarry sharp. Litteraly. I can run my finger down my blade now. No pressure. Just the slightest and you can feel that it wants to bite... To sink in. Total trip.
