I almost got to the other night. Pretty interesting actually.

Just got home from dropping my wife off at her parents house and come pulling up to my mom's home. As I pull into the driveway my mom comes out front using the international shush finger, I pull in shut off the car, slide out of the seat, lock and quietly close the car door. Pull out my XD40 and follow her into the backyard, and notice someone hopping their way over the fence on the other side of the yard, make my way over and peek over the fence and they are already across the neighbors yard and over the fence. Apparently they came in through my side gate to the backyard, through the chainlink fence for my pit and then hoofed it across to the other side of the yard before I could get back there and hop the fence. Damn thieves... I don't think he'll be coming back. If he does he has some choices to make. Go to jail, or if he assaults me, well you all know the option for that.

"I almost got to" .....

Interesting choice of words. Or is it me?

Peace,

Almost got to is accurate. Who knows if the guy was there to rob the house, or if he was just passing through backyards. If he was a thief and had got inside and was armed who knows what would or could have happened. That was my reasoning for the choice of words.

"Almost got to" is not very smart, the words I would use is "almost needed to"

big difference if you ask me, but sounds like you are out looking to shoot someone...Wouldn't want you to be my neighbor...

Ehh, yea that is a bit more accurate. Didn't really think about the wording. Just kinda posted the story, some read into more than others. I am smart about my guns, I don't leave them lying around and don't go playing with them and pointing them at everything, etc etc etc. They all have their own locks, and are locked away in a gun safe. I didn't mean to come off and as some gun toting, wanting to kill, shoot, murder someone etc.

OK, relieved to hear that. I thought (just like DBake did) that you sounded a little too enthusiastic.

Words are important. Wars have been fought over the interpretation of a tone of the written word.

Peace,

I once had a neighbor ask me to do a search of her house. I got home and she was outside with all three of her kids. SHe just came home from picking htem up at school and said she did not remember leaving the door unlocked. Asked me to come in with her because she did not feel safe. I had her stay outside and did a quick sweep for her, nothing out of the ordinary. Later I was taught how stupid that was of me by an instructor at defensive course I took. Never clear a house by yourself, if you have to, call for the police and let them do it. Now I understand that 50% casualties is considered light during a house clearing operation against concealed, armed and prepared opponents.

I think it was my first CCW instructor that told me that even a justified use of your weapon in self defense will still cost you $25,000+ in legal costs.

Once again, some of you are going in the direction of trouble. Put distance between you and what you are faced with. Call the police and let them handle it. Sure, protect yourself, but don't go looking for a chance to get into a situation.

Being armed and then going to someones backyard or house to make sure someone doesn't steal a garden hose or a Wal-Mart television set? Homie don't play that!

I had to once when I was patroling the mall. It wasn't pretty. I didn't have a chance to put my ninja skills to the test, I just reacted. 32 shots in 2 seconds. Its not something I like to talk about though.

LOL. Had me there for a sec.

As for AresXD40's choice of words, I never thought for a second that he literally meant that he almost "got" to. But Delija is quite correct; as silly as it gets sometimes, we have to be excruciatingly careful in our wording and what we say.

Haven't got to the rest of the posts below this one so perhaps someone already covered this but perhaps he meant, "Almost, HAD to..." I could see how this mistake could be made. Just food for thought.

Or perhaps he's looking for a reason to poke holes in someone. I dunno.

**EDIT**
Read the rest of the posts. Looks like you did mean something other than what you said. No harm - no foul.

Carry on.

Back on topic, No haven't HAD to use my XD to protect myself but I can say I've heard a big bump in the night a few months back (sounded like my garage door slamming shut - which happens when you just let it go after opening it and if you didn't know my house, you wouldn't know that. In other words, a thief might accidently let it slam behind them. ) Anyway!....I hear this BUMP and immediately grabbed the Subby w/ XML out of my nightstand and cleared the house. Yes, I agree w/ what someone else posted that clearing a house by yourself is SUPER dangerous but so is NOT clearing the house for peace of mind knowing that someone could 'possibly' be in your house.

Turns out it was an earthquake of all things! The next day I talked to two of my neighbors, asking if they felt it, and I found out they too cleared their homes w/ their handguns! We have our own version of "neighborhood watch" in Nevada!!! That's the good ol' Wild Wild West for ya.

There have been a hand full of other times on my business travels that I've had my hand ready to access my weapon in shady areas w/ people following me etc. That's the main reason I decided to carry in the first place was the areas I travel in for business. Some of them not so pleasent and in a suit and tie w/ a laptop bag in tow, you might as well have a bulls-eye on your back or a spray painted sign with the words, "VICTIM" on your back!

Massad Ayoob says it is most likely to be $100,00 per lawsuit, criminal and civil. You are also more likely to lose civil suit as the burden of proof is not as high as it is in criminal court. Remember OJ? He won the criminal case and lost the civil suit. Not the best example but is there.
