I received a non-functional 9mm S&W model 469 from a friend recently. It needs a new mag release, but that's easy enough. My problem is that when the gun is on safe, the hammer will not stay back. It will immediately follow the slide back forward and a round would presumably fire if the gun were powerstroked. The hammer will stay back if the safety is off, but the trigger will not drop the hammer. When the gun is put back on safe with the hammer back, the hammer drops. Yikes! What are some possible diagnoses? The hammer is in a flush position with the slide when the safety is off, but moves back slightly when the safety is engaged, I have no idea if this is normal. I only have limited experience troubleshooting handguns, and all mine thus far have been hammerless like my XD.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

I thought the warranty applied only to the original owner. My friend is not the original owner.

If this is true then the hammer will not stay back when the safety/decocker is on. Turn safety off the hammer stays back. I would see if you can download a manual and read about it. May not be anything wrong or just something minor.

Yeah, Everyone on other forums seems to be telling me it is working fine, it just needs a magazine. My friend did not have a magazine, so I will order one and it should work out! Can you tell that I'm unfamiliar with this weapon? haha

Slappin a mag in should solve the problem. My PX4 Sorm has the safety/decocker and seeing the hammer drop when putting the safety on took some getting use to.

That is normal, the safety acts as a decocker as well. Decocker = decocking the hammer so the first shot is always double action (long & heavy). Follow up shots will be sibgle action with the hammer automatically back so it is a short & light pull of the trigger.

The S&W also has a magazine disconnect and & will not fire unless a magazine is inserted, even if you have a round in the chamber.
