recoil system, can't get it out.

OK, I have a 4.5 XDM elite 10mm and I'm trying to clean it for the first time. No matter what I try, I cannot get the recoil system (spring assembly) out of the slide. It won't "give" enough to clear the barrel and come out. I can put the gun back together and everything seems fine, but when I take it apart, when you try to flex it up to pull it out, t won't clear the barrel and feels wedged in. I've cleaned quite a few guns before; never had this problem. Seems it should not be this hard, but obviously I am missing something. PLEASE HELP! Thanks in advance.

Is there a hole in the rod to capture the spring? I don't know, I don't have one. Like a 1911...pull slide back, paperclip in hole in guide rod to hold it? Doesn't really make sense it just doesn't pull off. Sometimes barrel shroud holds it to not be able to angle out... But just keep fiddling... But you have to get it back in. Not that difficult. Odd.
Try rotating it while lifting it up. My 3.8 10mm is really close and hangs up on the slide too. Sometimes it takes some grumbling and other times it dang near falls out.

I clearly am still at the grumbling stage, :(

Actually my Hellcat is the one that’s a real bugger to get out. The spring hangs up on the slide and takes some pressing to get it out. I always think I’m going to bend the rod while doing it. Can you compress the spring to get it to clear?
I have both The 4.5" and 5.25" first generation XDM in 10mm. I don't have any problem getting the spring and rod out for disassembly. Not sure why your's won't but it should come out with no problem. I'm pretty sure the spring pound pressure is 22 pounds.I have to compress it a slight bit with my fingers but it comes right out. I would make a phone call to Springfield to see if they could help you out.
