Well, what vel. are you looking to get w/ what bullets? If you want nuclear loads, BlueDot is a good choice w/ 230gr-45 or 124gr-9mm bullets, but won't work well for std. vel. loads. Longshot, PowerPistol, the same. Unique & WSF will get you safely to +p vel. w/ most bullet wts. in 9mm or 45acp.

How fast do you want to push the 9mm and .45acp loads and what bullet weights are you pushing? That is a good starting point. You will be lucky to get extremely high velocities with HP-38 using heavier bullets.

I use Bullseye for both 9mm and 45acp. With the 9mm, I can get 124gr bullets to around 1100fps and with the .45acp, I can get 230gr bullets to around 850 although I usually load the .45 down to 800fps. Also, you can achieve approx. the same results with Unique and Win 231, although Unique is a slower-burning powder when compared to Bullseye and Win 231.

230grn (45), and 124 (9mm). Right now I am getting about 660 fps out of my 45 with 5.3 grains of hp-38. I was hoping to be in the 800's like the manuals say I should be. I am shooting 4 inch barrels, so I know that is where some of the velocity is going.

I switched to titegroup last yeas from unique and it seems to be more consistant. I currently use it for 45 but plan on trying it with 9 as well.

This is the published data for HP-38 and 230gr fmj. What chrony are you using to get the 660 fps you quoted.

230 GR. HDY FMJ FP Hodgdon HP-38 .451" (DIA) 1.200" (OAL)

GR FPS Pressure
4.2 751 13,800 CUP

5.3 832 16,800 CUP

The loads I mentioned are primarily with 5" barreled .45's and 4.4 to 5" barreled 9mm's. The velocity differential between a 4" and a 5" barrel shouldn't be 140+fps like what you are describing. You should at least be able to get to 800fps with a shorter barrel .45acp without much trouble.

No doubt that that 1inch of barrel is NOT the reason I am so low. I would expect about 800-825.

I am using a Competition Electronics Chrono.

Might check the batteries in the chrono, there should be a +- 50fps drop in velocity per inch of barrel lost.

new battery, its only seen 2 or 3 trips to the range. I am not sure, but just by what I have seen, I think hp-38 may be a bit slow.

I get 830fps w/ 5.3grHP38 under a 230grLRN. I need 5.6gr to get teh 230grFMJ to that speed. Try Unique or WSF.

I use tightgroup for 9mm, 40SW, and 45ACP.
THe thing is, he wants higher vel. & you can barely get to std. vel. & no where near +p safely w/ TG, Clays & BE. Nope, med. burners rule the roost for easily getting high end vel. w/ lower pressures.

Well you only need 750fps w/230gr to make major in USPSA and I can't see the need for going any higher than that.

I have never understood the point of 190+ power factor(850fps /w230gr) in a 45ACP for plinking, training, or even replicating a factory load.

I have known some people to load their ammo to 220+ power factor for practice with 45ACP+p but I still am not seeing the point of such a high power factor. 45 ain't a hunting round, although some people do hunt with it.

Even Charles E. Petty one of the most well known gunrag writers on the planet quotes Titegroup as one of the powders he can't live without.
