I'm looking at buying a 5" ported model in either .357Sig or .40SW for a "fun gun." I'd like to be able to buy different barrels so I can shoot both calibers from the same platform, but I'm not sure if this can be done with a "ported" model. I really don't care if the other caliber has to be non-ported, but I just want to know if it'll even work!

Yep, only difference between the ported XD's and the standards is the openings in the slide, and the holes in the barrel, so having a solid barrel in there shouldn't give you a bit of problems. Might be a good way to adapt the gun for defensive carry as well, so if you fire it in a retention posture, you won't be lighting yourself on fire, which will always give you a worse day. :)
