I am wanting to polish some of the external metal parts on my Xd. Wanted to know if anyone has done this and pros and cons. Any opinion or advise is welcome. Also wondering if this will make the parts more susceptible to rust etc. Thanks

All my XDm's are polished like you are describing. I don't really have any pro's / con's; there just certain things I like to do to "set up" my pistols and that includes polishing certain components. I just picked up a 5.25 tonight and I already polished everything and haven't even fired it yet. No issues with rust. I tried to take a pic for ya but couldnt get it to show up right.

Never had a rust problem at all.
I also didn't feel it looked silly, contrary to some.
Some people like to customize their firearms, some obviously do not.

Polishing the black off does not get rid of the melonite which is still there to protect the metal. I have abrasive blasted several XDm`s to make them look like a stainless XD.

Hey James, I'm thinking about throwing some aluminium oxide at mine to park/duracoat it. Any areas that need to be protected from the media?

Just make sure that the slide is completely disassembled, that way when you are done you can clean all of the aluminum oxide particles out of all the crevices.

I would if you really want to. I polished mine up with a Dremel and Flitz. Slide stop, take down lever, grip safety, barrel and all internals. Looks good in my opinion but up to you.

Can the slide be glassbead blasted and the melonite finish still be present? I have done some polish work to my xd9 service and love to tinker with it. Just wonderin' if it could be done and not have to fight the rust bugs.
