Just started shooting and bought a used bi-tone XDM 9mm 4.5. I am thinking of adding some sort of red dot sight, or something similar.

Any suggestions as to what might be a good choice and will also fit?

Just doing range targets (steel and paper) and action shooting.

An alternative approach, that works well, and is closer to the bore.
You can get a mount that replaces the rear sight, or have the slide machined, as illustrated.

Here's a pic of my 9mm XDM Open gun. It shoots great.

AZXD I would like to try a setup like yours. I friend of mine that I shoot Steel Challenge with had a simular setup on his Glock. It failed one weekend, so I'm a little nervous doing a slide mount. It does look like a lot of folks are using that setup, so it must work.
