that means that they were 4000 or so calories short of what they needed, every day. You can't maintain that sort of loss very long. In fact, if you are not ( most of the time) gathering/preserving more than you need to eat, you're going to get clobbered by the first drought, pestilence (of animals/plants) flood, storm, etc that comes along.

Most is water loss and the rest will be muscle and fat loss... That's why when you need to survive most of the time its better to stay put than wonder around the wilderness lost. Gather water, Build shelter, and gather, catch, or kill food. You want to use as little energy doing all of those. The rest of the time you rest and keep a lookout for help.

sorry, but you aint got 20 lbs of water in your body to lose (and survive it). The fattest of the guys lost over 40 lbs. So, no, most of it aint water loss. One of the guys was quite skinny to start with. I agree that some of it was muscle, cause they were not using all their muscles, (most likely) the way that body builders are careful to do. Either fat or muscle loss, tho, means that they were deficient in calories by 4000 or so PER DAY. So the rest of my post applies. You have to be able to harvest much, more food than people think.

There's a reason why the limit of their ordeal is set at 3 weeks, not at 3 months. They'd be dead. You need your clothing and quite a bit more kit, or a lot more luck about where you're located when you try to survive on what you can gather. Plus a lot more ability. Most of them are pathetically ignorant. They especially do not realize how important it is to get fire, water and food (preserved) the very first few days, while they still have strength from eating well.

The average human body is composed of 65% water.

and if you lose much water, your body ceases to function. At high levels of exercise, you have to rehydrate every 20 minutes, or performance suffers (measurably)

In the real world, that may or may not, be true. Almost anything is possible on 'reality TV' as they draw you into watching the next episode.

Might as well argue something useful, like how many angels can dance n the head of a pin, which gun lube is best, or why every Glock ever made is better than all other handguns.

all the couples in this show HAD water, they could rehydrate as much as needed, and they all know the value of staying hydrated. So the weight loss was not water/loss, or at least very little of it was. Don' kid yourself, long term, under stress like that, you need many lbs of food per day. as in 5 lbs of processed food. Which can mean 20 lbs of plant food, or 10 lbs of live weight meat/fish. Without modern gear, it's very difficult to survive in many parts of the world. That's one of the reasons there's always been fighting, over the better areas.

With proper kit, as in snares and gill nets, and ignoring regulations about game taking (ie, jacklighting, bait), with a cross bow and pellet rifle (scoped) it becomes a much easier task. But if you have to fight, (and you would, for certain, sooner or later) those weapons would soon belong to your killers. You won't know when the attack would come, so your AK, etc, would have to always be with you. Carrying a pack, and two longarms is a major pain in the butt. Especially the xbow, but making a lot of noise to take game will make the need of the fighting rifle more likely.

On the show, the men way overdid it on the shelter building. All that's really needed is some sticks laid at an angle over a log, or other sticks, and the 2 of you cuddle under a "roof" of sticks, ferns, moss. They built what amounted to giant structures, wasting a lot of their calories. In some areas, you'd have to make spears/clubs/fire immediately, to keep the hyenas/baboons from killing you. :)

Modern tarps/hammocks/bivies and clothing make you much safer and more comforatable when in the boonies. All the effort that they put into firemaking, having a way to cook and boil water, etc, you can carry with you with almost no effort at all. That is the gift of life, given to us by industrialization, specialization of work, and mass production/capitalism.
