New XD 40 on the way / Local Ammo deals?

Thanks to most of the members here, I have an XD 40 Service on layaway. Its been a while since I've owned any handguns and I didn't want to make the mistake I made in my youth of buying the 1st thing I could afford vs. the gun I really wanted but many of you helped me decide on the XD through your experiences. This forum is a great resource!

They're throwing in 4 boxes of ammo with the deal which I think is going to be American Eagle but, I may have to ask for something else based on the comments I've seen here.

Since I'm in LA County in California, our Walmarts don't sell ammo so, I was wondering where good (read: cheap) places to buy ammo were locally or if anyone has good experiences with online retailers. I'm also looking for any ammo brand suggestions as I want a good "out of box" experience while breaking in my new XD.

hey socal, welcome to the forum! I'm in the LA area as well, and i wanted to clear up for you that many walmarts in the county do sell ammo. I buy my ammo almost exclusively from walmart.
These are the walmarts that i've bought from:
-Pico Rivera
-West Covina
-Puente Hills
-Duarte

The walmart price for the winchester white box .40s&w is $15.97/box of the 100round value packs. Those are in my opinion, the cheapest way to go with decent target ammo.

Where is it that you're getting the xd? Where do you plan to shoot at? I usually shoot over at Burbank. Hope i've helped some.

Hey Eric! Thanks for the info. I got the XD at Turner's. I'm in the valley closer to Agoura so that may be where I end up shooting most of the time. There's a range in Northridge, too.

The Walmart locations you mentioned are probably far enough away to offset any savings with gas prices these days but I'll keep looking. I was under the impression that Walmart wasn't selling firearms or ammo anymore here. I guess I need to keep looking. That price is hard to beat!

Ahh, the valley... well i think it was the northridge walmart that my buddy went to last time and didn't sell any ammo there. So perhaps thats why you were saying that. I know that the turners out in that area sells some fairly priced factory reloads, if thats something you want to try.
I have never really seen walmart around this area sell firearms though... just pellet guns and such.

As for the ranges, the FiringLine range in northridge is actually the same company as the one in burbank. If you get an annual membership there, then you get full access to the one in burbank and huntington beach as well. here's a link to their website http://www.firingline.net/

If you don't like that place, there is another range out in van nuys i think. And an outdoor range in the tujunga, sunland area which i forget the name to.

Don't forget to pick up a speed loader. I would imagine even the 10 rounders are tough on the last 2 rounds.
I thought I'd start with the WWB and see how it goes. I found out the closest Walmart with Ammo is in Simi Valley. Whatever Turner's gives me its probably not going to be their best so I'll go stock up at Walmart while I'm waiting.

Firing line looks like a pretty good outfit. I'm still undecided about that.

Hey Manic Mechanic, thanks for the tip on the speed loader, too!
I'm new to this too.

Check out a gun show. There are lots of people selling reloads. There also seems to be a big difference between the quality from the different reloaders. I bought about 1500 rounds at the last one and am still figuring out what I like. My local range will put you in touch with their reloader. Your might do the same. There is a significant price drop when you buy 1000 rounds.

Check the internet too. Ammoman is well thought of and his prices include shipping. Cheaper than Dirt is often mentioned. You can get coupons for free shipping and it looks like they have a $6 for anything shipping fee now. There are others.

Expensive hobby we have :(

wow thats right.. i forgot all about gun shows... there are some decent deals to be had a gunshows for ammo. Especially with reloads. I know there is a show scheduled for early nov. in glendale. I'm not sure if thats too far for ya or what though.
You know what driving is like around here. What should take ten minutes takes an hour and what should take an hour could take a week. So Glendale? I'm interested. Where can I find out more?

They have very little vendor info, and its not the greatest gun show around, but i got decent deals on extra magazines, solvent, & reloads.
Thanks Eric! Its all news to me... I'll check it out.
