Just got off the phone with customer service at SA re a problem with my gun. I was hoping I wasn't going to have to do this, but it seems to be getting worse. The finish is coming off on the barrel (flat part also) and inside the frame.

Thanks to people who have abused the system (their words) and have been able to receive free Armory Kote jobs (this doesn't refer to legimate problems), I have to pay for shipping and insurance and they'll take a "look" and see if it's within warranty service. It will be gone 4-6 weeks (damn). If it's covered they will cover shipping up to $25, but at this point, I don't know how much it will cost to ship.

Shortyly after I bought it last year in May or June, I discovered it was shooting 6" low. I contacted them and they gave me a shipping # with UPS and it was shipped at their expense with insurance. Returned in 10 days. No real questions asked. Per Vicki, a recoat wil take longer as they are very busy and I can accept that, tho I don't like 4-6 weeks.

Things have changed and not for the good. I am not, of course, accusing anyone here of abusing the system and those weren't my words anyway, they were hers. This is the way it will be now I guess.

The problem is that people are purposely letting their xd`s rust to get a new finish.

Or the people dont under stand the finish does come of the barrel becuase thats were there is a lot of metal to metal contact. Even on my chromed xd`s exactly were the blueing came off is where the chrome has polished it self shiny....metal on metal rubbing does that.

I was reading about shipping handguns via UPS, and they seemed to imply that you must ship overnight.

If overnight is something like $70, two ways, thats the price of having someone recoat the gun.

Maybe fedex is better about shipping handguns?

One thing I will say on this subject, even if people are abusing the system. So what? Like it or not, the XD is primarily competing against and being compared to the Glock. The XD's finish is not as good as Glock's. SA needs to get a comparable or the same finish as Glock. Other people use the Glock/tenifer finish, it is not proprietary. SA should start using it or something as good. If I want a carry gun that I have to baby, it will be a blued steel 1911. People carry plastic guns because they want a reliable, essentially maintenance free pistol.

from what I hear Armory coat aint all that great anyway, If I were you I would just send it somewhere else and get it hard chromed or another kind of durable finish, It's not that expensive.

this finish concern cracks me up. yrs ago i when i bought my sig 220 from an ol boy that had never shot it to speak of.. I got it along with several boxes of shells ect ect the weapon was pristeen. I had it and in a week from carrying it the blue was gone from the areas of contact in the holster and the top of the barrel that is just like our xd's is now polished and not from me polishing it from me shooting the hell out of it and i could care less its a weapon ment to be used as a tool i take care of it as i do every weapon i have and trust me that sig goes bang every time there is no slop in it . and you dont want me shooting at you at any distance out to 100 yrds. yea my 2 xd's are getting the barrel polished but its not because the finish sucks it because i use them and will continue to do so until mabe it starts to look like my ol antique mod 94 30-30

then i may think of letting them have it to refinish for free mabe its just me but it seems like so many people want the weapon to not show contact points.. either that or lots of folks are just new to having a weapon and think it should remain like a show car

sorry for the rant fellas and the last thing i want to do is make someone butt hurt but shoot your weapon wipe it down clean it and enjoy the personality it shows i hope you all are old enough to have a few laugh lines on your face and a few miles under your belts.. but then again each to your own.. be safe and shoot straight

Difference being your sig probably will never rust. Since sig is nice enough to use stainless steel in their barrels.

Hell my XD the outside top of the chamber was all scratched to **** just from the test firing and me looking at it before purchase. I have my doubts about the metal used in that area but time will tell.

Personally when buying my XD I also factored into the cost the fact that most likely I'd have to have it coated. My coating of choice is Hard Chroming from tripp

indianbullet, I'm glad this subject cracks you up. Also, I am not new to shooting. I was in le for 27yrs and have handled firearms for about 30. I clean all of my firearms after shooting; always have and always will, my life depends on it. I used my blue S&W revolver for 14yrs and it was used before it was issued to me. I have had my Beretta since we were issued them in 1990 (it's also a "blue" finish). I carried both guns on a daily basis and took care of them.

The bluing on the revolver is a little worn, but after 30+ years, I would be surprised if it wasn't. I'm over 30 and I'm very worn. The Beretta is in excellent condition and shows no wear at all.

All I'm saying is I have read numerous posts re the finish and I am sending my in for a warranty ck/fix. I also wanted to point out the changes by SA due to the abuses that have occurred by some people. That isn't my intent as I wouldn't even think of doing that. I love the gun, but I'm disappointed with the finish. When looking at the gun from the top, it's disconcerting to see this black finish until you get to the part of the barrel that's visible and you see shiny metal.

By the way, indianbullet, I hope you don't shoot like you write, it's difficult to read your posts; rambling, disjointed, grammatically screwed up, etc. It cracks me up.

Does anyone else have any comments made about the quality of the Armory Coat? I will do a search, but I'd still like to know here. Thanks.

James, I don't think you were referring to me re not taking care of the gun, at least I hope not. I don't have a rust problem and I do take very good care of the weapon (comes from all of the inspections while in the academy those many years ago  ) and as I said, I would never try to intentionally damage or not take care of any product in order to get something for free; that isn't me.

I totally agree, and I also believe alot of people are not taking care of their guns and force it to rust. My finish on my pistol is rust free for 1 yr. Granted, I dont CCW, maybe that is the weak link. But I have no problem with SA making the warrenty contingent on looking at it first.

 I understood it just fine. I suggest a remedial reading course if you had issues. The only hostile post in the thread was yours

Again, guys, I don't have a rust problem, just the finish. If SA says it is normal wear and tear, so be it and I'll take care of it myself. If they will cover it under warranty, great. I did find out they will cover shipping up to $50 if it is a warranty problem, not $25 as I was first told.

I disagree with you NExd re the last, but you are entitled to your opinion. Also, I don't need a remedial reading course, but thank you for your concern.

It's a moot point anyhow; indianbullet apologized, I thanked him, wished him good luck with his gun and I hope it's ok between us.
