ok well i have a friend who has two xd's he has got me hooked. i love the way they shoot and feel. Im wanting this for a carry gun. So im looking at an xd 40 sc. Will they make a 9mm conversion barrel for this gun? Also should i spend the extra money on the stainless slide? i like the look better. and eventually will get it polished. so do i need the stainless for polishing or will just the black polish? also ive heard things about gun kote? how much does this cost and what kinds can you get?

Should i buy new or used? is there much of a difference? also im wanting a guide rod laser. do you know of anyone who makes these? thanks
in advance for the help.

Lasermax makes Guide Rod Lasers for the XDs, but not the SC yet. I've heard mixed reviews on the durability of the guide rod lasers.

Of course you could always get a service model and have the grip cut down to SC size and then you would have lasermax and barrel conversions available immediately.

With my skill level I wouldn't try it myself. Here's the thread of someone who had it down, I think he mentions where he got it done.

I'm thinking about doing just this for a carry weapon. OD XD .40 Service with a cut down grip.
yea thats really kool. but is the grip extension clip for the service does it make it as long as the service? let me rephrase that. If i buy the SC and use the grip ext mag is it the same size as the service stock>?

It's not an extention is a sleeve, so that you can use the full size mags in the Sub-Comp without over inserting it.
So the mag with the sleeve on it is a full size mag, and will fit the Servics or Tactical, if you take the sleeve off.
I think that's what you where asking.

im asking about overall length of the handle

so if i get a subcompact and the handle is lets say

3inch handle
then adding the sleve adds 1inch to it so 4inches.

is that the same length as a normal service model?

ps those numbers are random i dont know specifics

Using a full size mag with the sleeve on it makes the SC grip the same length as a service or tactical grip.

I would check with Ajames on that....my understanding is that it is possible to mix the colors to make anything "non-stnadard"...sort of like mixing a color for home painting.

That being said, the Service model butt cutdown is on my list of "improvements" for the reasons discussed, easier concealability at times, ability to interchange barrels, and the ability to add the sleeve to go back to the full size handle and mags when at the range or whatever...of course I could just buy another XD to add to my collection!

Somebody here took the black barrel and "cleaned" the black off of it using, ??steel wool / fine sand paper / blueing remover??, which, I do not know. The result was a almost mirror finish on the barrel. I am certain, given enough time and the proper material and patience, you could do this to the slide.

Obviously, if done, you will be providing the shiney metal a lot of love in preventing the rust from visiting.

You could get it hard chromed.
If you want, take a look here http://www.xd-hs2000.com/durakote2.html
for some examples of what can be done to the slide as far as color.

As far as size of the XD:

see question 35 and 36 about sizes, hopefully this helps.

If in doubt, consult your Manuel for your handgun.
If in doubt, consult a reputable firearms service center.
If in doubt, consult SPRINGFIELD ARMS.

Never “play” with a handgun, loaded or not
Always unload the gun before handling.
Read the manufactures gun safety suggestions, and follow them.
Do take the time to attend a gun safety class(as).

Introduction to the XD Pistol: http://www.gunsandammomag.com/techside/xd_010305/
Another introduction to the XD, this time leaning towards the sub compact model, VERY informative site: http://www.thearmedcitizen.com/gunpages/xdcomp.htm

If your gun is near you now. UNLOAD IT, remove the ammuntion to a safe location in another room. Then verify the gun is unloaded. Then again verify the gun is unloaded AND that there is no ammunition in the same room as you are now with your gun/s.

1.)
Q: Can the magazine be left loaded for extended periods of time?
A: Yes, it will not hurt the magazine or the spring. Actually makes loading a full magazine easier.

2.)
Q: I can’t get the slide (aka dust cover) off?
A: Take the magazine out first.
B. Lock the slide back.
C. Flip the disassembly lever up,
D. Pull the trigger,
E. Slide the slide forward, it will come right off.

3.)
Q: Do XD’s rust.
A: Yes all metal can rust with improper care. Note, Improper care. Also, some XD’s may have a surface rust issue. Contact Springfield Armory about this.

4.)
Q: If my XD is rusting, will I have to pay SA to refinish it?
A: Depends on what type of rust. It is best to contact them for correct answer. Surface rust, generally they pay for basic refinish. Rust from damage, probably yes, you pay.
A: http://www.hs2000talk.com/viewtopic.php?t=20321&highlight=finish

5.)
Q: Can I put different sights in?
A: Yes. Some have a hard time, some easy. http://www.xd-hs2000.com/shopping

6.)
Q: Can I buy an XD and put in aftermarket barrels?
A: Yes. Pistolgear.com and AJAMES have some, as well as others here on the forum.

7.)
Q: Failure to feed / eject?
A: Try adjusting your magazine feed lips.
A: Dismantle and clean your magazine inside and lightly lube.
A: Are you “limp wristing”? Hold your wrist a little more stiff.
A: Is your thumb interfering with the slide action, many times this is the problem. Hold your thumb down just a little lower.
A: Sometimes the springs in the magazines need to be broken in. Leave the mags full until you get to the range. Give it a try
A: Defective design of the 40 S&W round. The short stubby round with a truncated cone bullet is just made to jam up against the chamber top, especially if the lip of the case catches on the edge of the chamber. It does not matter what gun, HK, Glock, SIG, S&W or CZ, the tying factor seems to be the round. My suggestion is try to use only rounds with rounded flat point, they seem to feed better. I know that does not do much in case of JHP usually but that is the nature of the beast

Q: What is a good product to protect the XD?
A: Whatever works best for you.
A: Something safe for a polymer gun
A: Blue Wonder makes a product called Armadillo that works great.

9.)
Q: What is Armadillo?
A: A wax protectant for your metal parts. Heating the wax a little helps in the application of it, or the use of a wet warm application towel.

10.)
Q: Is brand XXXXXXX ammo any good?
A; Try it, find out.

11.)
Q: Brand XXXXXX ammo always jambs up my gun.
A: Use different ammo.
A: You might have to polish your feed ramp.

12.)
Q: What is the feed ramp?
A: With the gun disassembled, it is the part of the barrel where the shell casing enters. It is shinny and at an angle. The bullet nose and case slide up this to enter the barrel. Sometimes the ramp gets debris, scratched or even is just a little off angle for the type of round your are shooting.

13.)
Q: What is the best defense round?
A: The one that hits the target.

14.)

A: No. It just keeps the bugs off your head.

23.)
Q: Can I shoot my gun underwater?
A: Why would you want to? Some say yes, some say no. Ask Springfield for the Proper answer.

25.)
Q: Can I replace my striker?
A: Yes, details online.

26.)

A: Oil attracts dirt. Try a dry lubricant, or something such as CLP (Clean, Lubricate, Protect).

30.)
Q. Do I need to clean the XD after every use?

31.)
Q: Will SA buy back my 10 round magazines?
A: Ask them. It depends on when you purchased the gun in relation to the ban expiring.

34.)
Q: My “chamber loaded” indicator is stuck in the UP position. What is wrong?
A: Is the gun loaded? Is a round in the chamber?
A: Parts 37,38, or 39... The spring keeps the indicator down until a round is chambered which lifts it up. I think what you will need to do is take down the entire slide dissemble.(you don't have to take out the extractor if you don't want to, this should not be part of your problem.) I would bet that you have some piece of "gunk" lodged between the slide frame and your indicator that is stuck in there. That will be easy enough to see after you remove the indicator, indicator spring, and indicator pin, and the entire slide assembly

Q. Are there any CAD drawings for the XD?

A. http://www.hs2000talk.com/viewtopic.php?t=21209&highlight=

36.)
Q. What is the size of a XD?
A. Slide width at widest point = 1.090"
Plastic frame width just below slide = 1.190"
grip just above magazine = 1.210"
Widest part of grip (includes the raised thumb "lump" area) = 1.264
Absolute widest point (includes protrusion from slide release) = 1.286"

If comparing to other guns, bear in mind Springfield measures the overall length the way I would (total length from end of barrel to whatever point extends farthest back, be it beavertail, slide, etc.). Some (Glock) measure the total slide length, but neglect to include the portion of the grip that extends even more behind that point.

Q. What is the size difference of a XD verses a Glock? Based on info from Glock and SA's sites, the following are published barrel lengths:

A.
Glock 19: 4.02"
XD9 Service: 4.05"
Glock 17: 4.49"
XD9 Tactical: 5.01"
Glock 34: 5.39"

A.

38.)
Q.) XD size compared to a sig?
A.) The XD service is nearly identical in size to the Sig 228/229
B.) Bianchi 19L holster shows the same size for the XD as the Sig 2340 & 2009

39.)
Q. Is the Bi-tone stainless steel?
A. YES Bi Tone is stainless. Bead blasted stainless and that's why it doesn't have the "bling". This it true. Remember, Stainless = Stain LESS. It CAN rust, but isn't as prone to rust. Also, there are different grades of stainless steel that will offer more or less resistance to rust.
B. No matter what you get, you still need to take care of it.

Q. Is the warranty transferable to a new owner?
A. According to their info pack that goes with the gun upon purchase. Paragraph one on the description of the "limited lifetime warranty". " Springfield, Inc. warrants to the initial retail purchaser that the products it wells will be free of defects in workmanship or material during his or her lifetime as long as he or she owns the product............" . Note that it says " ... initial retail purchaser...". However, later on it also states in the section titled " Disclaimer of Liability" (half way thru paragraph #2). " Springfield, Inc. will not be responsible for the results of careless handling, unauthorized repairs and adjustments, corrosion.........." .Note that it says S.A will not be responsible for ..........corrosion. And we know what they have been doing for corrosion.

41.)
Q. Ammo magazine descriptions- (as with everything else here, it is subjective)
A. *Standard capacity = a flush mag that does not extend past the end of the grip.

*High capacity = A mag that usually holds over 20 rounds and extends several inches from the grip.

*Clinton mag = a magazine that was designed to hold more then ten rounds, but had been altered to diminish the capacity to comply with federal legislation in effect from 1994 to 2004.

*Clip = A stripper clip that is designed to load various rifles such as a SKS.

Q. How loud is a gunshot?
A. http://www.freehearingtest.com/hia_gunfirenoise.shtml

45.)
Q. I can’t get the magazine to drop out without the mag button feeling like it’s going to break.

A. Take the base plates off the magazine. Then take a pot of boiling water.... drop the mag bases into the water for about 30-40 seconds. Dry the bases off and reinstall them on the magazine, load it up and give it a try. You will make the base plates more flexible by dehydrating them it wont cure anything but should help.

46.)
Q. What can I use to clean the polymer frame?
A. Quoted from “fsquared” who wrote to SA about this: “ I recently purchased a Springfield Armory XD40. This is the first firearm with polymer components that I have owned.

What solvents or cleaning materials do you recommend for the polymer frame of the firearm? Would WD-40 or like spray cleaners harm the frame and weaken it.

What would the effects be if I were to use a fast drying spray like Birchwood Casey's Gun Scrubber?

Or, what are your thoughts about using a "soap and water" approach with Simple Green solution?

Your expert advice is very much appreciated, thank you." “

Response from Springfield Armory (Terry Bowers):

"You can use the same solvents on the polymer frame as you would use on the steel slide. However, some solvents, such as WD-40 could possibly leave behind a slippery residue. Your best bet would be to stick with the soap and water or simple green approach. That polymer is very resistant to most solvents. Try to stay away from the very powerful solvents, as all you will need to clean the polymer will be good cleaning oil. I hope this helps a little. Please let me know if you have any more questions. Thanks."

Q. HELP, my rear sight has fallen out, should I use Locktight to secure it? And if I do, how can I be certain it is in the right place?
A. (Compliments of snak-eater1) Use a spring-loaded center punch to put some dimples in the bottom of the dovetail, this will raise up a little metal. Then use a brass punch to drift the rear sight back into position and to adjust windage. Once in place, you MIGHT want to locktite it into place, although I have never needed to do so after using the center punch method.

48.)
Q. How do I clean my gun?
A. Unload the gun, Unload the gun. Unload the gun. Unload the gun.

Items needed to clean the gun are: Bore cleaner, barrel brush, patches, lint free rags, newspaper / gun cleaning mat, air compressor, lubricant, gun metal protectant, tooth pick, toothbrush, cotton swabs. Make certain the gun is unloaded and no bullets or laded magazines are even in the same room as you and the gun.

Your gun general comes with at coarse brush used to go in the barrel and also for the outside of the gun. It's nylon (or some other type of plastic) that is a lot less hard than the gun barrel. I use Brass on mine (lubricated with bore cleaner) and I’ve never had a problem.

There are many "bore cleaners" out there to get rid of powder fouling in the barrel and around the moving parts of the gun, such as Shooter’s Choice, Hoppe’s#9, Blue Wonder's bore cleaner or Breakfree CLP.

Unload the gun.

Once you get the gun disassembled (read the manual), run the brush soaked in cleaner up and down the bore several times. Leave it, we'll get back to it later.

Next, clean the slide with the cleaner you just used to clean the bore. Soak a patch with it and rub all the metal parts, leaving them wet. You want to clean the top, bottom, and sides, of the slide. Every part you can and even some you cant see. Use the cotton swabs and toothbrush, toothpicks, patches for this. Pay particular attention to the "feed ramp", this is a part that must be clean and scratch free, as the bullet tips must slide along here to get into the barrel for firing.

Then clean the frame the same way. You won't need to worry as much about the plastic parts as they don't corrode like the metal parts will. Scrub all of the dirt out of the frame. Scrub down the metal parts and leave them wet. You really don't need to get the frame soaking in the bore cleaner.

Now back to the barrel. Run a patch soaked with solvent down the barrel. Next use a dry patch until the patch comes out clean. You may have to run a wet patch, dry patch, wet patch dry patch a few times, do this until they come out clean, The barrel is now cleaned, Put it aside as you wipe off the slide and frame.

If you have an air compressor, use it to dry off the gun after all the pieces are clean. If not, use a lint free rag.

Next, You will want to apply a lube to the moving parts of the gun, JUST A LITTLE. Notice I said lube, not oil. You can use oil, or you can use a product like Blue Wonder's DISORTEC XFR, DuPont Teflon, Gun Butter, something.

Wipe off any excess lube.
Make certain the gun is unloaded.

Reassemble; rack the slide a few times to work the lube into the moving parts.

Q. I am NEW to handguns, what are some basic rules I should / could know?
A. The following is a link to the NRA web site. Go here http://www.nrahq.org/education/guide.asp for some great information on safety for you and your family. Always treat the gun (handgun / long gun) as being LOADED. Sign up for gun safety classes ASAP. Sign up for gun Handling classes, how to aim, etc.
There are some people that have been shooting for years, that still sign up for classes from professionals as refreshers. It’s better to be knowledgeable, safe and alive, then stupid and dead.

50.)
Q. Once I get to be a good shot with my handgun, what can I do then for fun with it?
A. Well, here is a list of BAD things to use a gun for: bank robbery, car jacking, armed assault, terrorist, hi-jacker, armored car robber, candy stealer from kids.
A. Here is a list of what you can do once you are proficient with your handgun: http://idpa.com. Check it out. Or you can get into the old revolver western shoots held in some areas.
