If you were out in the wilderness for an extended period of time, lest say a month or so, would you choose the XD as a primary sidearm? Would it be able to withstand a hostile environment? If so, what kind of regular field maintenance would you perform while in the field?

I would have to grab a Ruger 22/45 and 100 rounds of hollow point .22 ammo. Put food in the pot and will have to do for emergency protection. With the snubby barrel, it will be fairly loud enough to let search and rescue find you to deliver the survival pizza.

Don't see a need for a maintenance kit.

A 22. would you not want something a little more hi powered in case you have to shoot a bear or wolf. I know nothing or outdoor survival so please excuse if this is a foolosh question.

I wouldn't want a pistol in the field either. I would take a 12 gauge pump with a variety of ammunition (bird, buck, slug). I would make sure it's clean after every use/every day if the situation allows.

Given the limited choices in my "arsenal", yes I would carry the XD. It is plenty durable. For maintenance, I would probably carry a Boresnake and some CLP of some sort.

If I knew I was going to be in the wilderness for a month or two, I would probably carry my S&W 686 .357, cleaning equipment, and extra springs. Not much to go wrong with a revolver.

If my only choice was the XD, I'd carry cleaning gear as garyk suggested and some extra springs and I'd probably put in a one piece guide rod beforehand.

I think the XD would be as durable as any other semi-auto pistol if given the proper care. If you weren't shooting it except for acquiring game or in a self defense situation I wouldn't think that anything other than routine cleaning would be necessary.

I think an XD would be an excellent choice as a primary SIDEARM for extended field use.

i carry mine in the field all the time at the deer lease. the only cleaning equip i bring is some brakecleaner and hops #9. you dont need a bunch of cleaning equip in the field... unless you plan on shooting a few hundered rounds a day.

I carry my Sig2340 while hiking and such because I like the 357 sig round and it has plenty of power, range and accuracy to ward off most North American threats. I would not have a problem at all being stranded with am XD for a month or two IF it was in the same chambering, I just happen to own a sub9 at the moment though.
I do agree though that if I KNEW I was going to be afield for an extended time, a shotgun would be my first choice and a sidearm would accompany it.

This is a hypothetical question and if I read into it correctly, I think what is presented is a survival situation where you need to survive in the wilderness with just a single field pistol so with that I mind, I stick with my original choice the Ruger 22/45. Sure, there are other weapons that would serve better like a shotgun, but for a "field pistol" I would take my little .22.
100 round of .22 would be enough to put some small game in the pot and it isn't the best for defense, but it is better than a pointed stick
Also I won't be spending the day shooting at tin cans to pass the time since your survival is on the line, so I would pass on having gun oil, patches, cleaning rod, borelight... A good flap over holster would suffice and I can clean my pistol when I get resuced.
If there were no rules and I could bring what ever I wanted, I would have one of these <img src=http://img150.exs.cx/img150/1908/jeeprescue5fc.jpg> fully stocked with food, water, sleeping bag, tent, dvd player, folding chairs, air matress, kite, and.........

I was watching the descovery channel the other night and an interesting fact for the united states there has been no reports of wolfs ever attacking a human.
