I shoot IDPA monthly and was horrified at how inadequate my skills were when I started. Make sure you get involved and STAY involved. Your skills will improve quickly. The biggest mistake most new shooters make is getting embarrassed and they stop shooting. I promise no one will make fun of you and they will help in any way possible. If they do and don't, you need to find another group to shoot with.
By the way, the best shooter at our club is shooting an XDm.
I have used my XD9 in IDPA for the past five years. Be open to well intentioned and constructive feedback from experienced shooters. Their observations can be a great help in improving your skills. Oh, and practice...a lot. Have fun!
