+1 on Field Strip/ Inspect/ Clean/Lubricate before any ammunition is even considered...It is how we found out the brand-spankin' minty-fresh Glock 23 FDE my buddy picked up in March was missing its extractor hook (I defecate you not!) before he went to the range to blast away--factory part was defective and sheared-off...so much for Perfection eh ?

for a cleaning kit, I am a pretty big fan of the Otis IWCK my shooting buddy snagged recently at a gun show--very nifty design in a handy small package that's easy to keep in a range bag...I personally have a Hoppes kit in a soft bag my 9 year old bestowed upon me for Father's Day 2 years ago that's been a good base platform--it has robust brass rods and standard cleaning brushes and jags (I have supplemented it with an AR Chamber brush/bore guide and some brass jags) but for a starter kit it was a pretty good jump-off point

I'm thinking of picking up the full otis kit for all the different calibers I have. Anyone have it? I also really like my Boresnake. Although there isn't much barrel on my 3.3!
Men pricey to be compact

I have the monster kit I'm selling 9/45/556/762 pm me if your serious

Safety is a momentary choice. Prior performance and certification are completely irrelevant.

Bunk 22: I tried that same approach first time I attempted neurosurgery...half way thru I remember saying to myself "dang, wish I would have read the instruction guide book" :)

Thanks all for your advice. Glad to see that "Field Stripping" was not what I had originally thought it was and that it actually exists.

Well, you guys will be seeing me here often asking more newbie questions

Willjr...Orange County. Beautiful area. There will be days that you will miss the change of seasons and days that you will smile when your friends are under two feet of snow and you are drinking a fruity girly drink on the beach in shorts and flip flops
