My parents never allowed me to have a gun, I could shoot my friends BB gun. Could also use my Dad's rifle, if he was in a good mood. At age 16, I saw a Hi-Standard Sentinel at the local sport store, drooled over it for a couple of weeks and finally thought I'd approach Dad. He gave his blessings, I ran to the shop with $37.50, and ran out with a brand new gun. By the way, 51 years later, I still have it. Still fun to shoot!
I got my first real firearm when for my 10th birthday. It was a Marlin Model 99 .22LR my dad bought for $35 at a pawn shop, which I still have 18 years later! The Model 99 is the predecessor to the Model 60, I didn't even realize the rifle was 40 years old until recently when I stripped and refinished it and saw the model number.
I've easily put 10,000 rounds through the rifle over the years. It's still fun to shoot and pretty reliable. I'll pass it on to my son someday if I can get it running 100%, if not I'll buy him his own Model 60.
I got my first handgun (XD-40) when I was 24, right after Hurricane Katrina.
