How do you like your gun cleaning mat? Do any of you use the exploded diagram mats and do you find them to be helpful?

I use a rifle cleaning mat.

It has plenty of room for a rifle and of course pistols.

It is just plain grey and why pay 3 or 4 times more for a nice exploded diagram that will get filthy anyways.

I just grabbed a couple plain ones from Midway when they were on sale. Got one big enough to cover my shooting table so things stay in place. Never did understand the diagram on the work surface.

You know, I've got a nice one (don't remember what diagram is on it) in the cabinet in the mud room. I don't know if I've used it. I always grab one of the old hand towels (sometimes two depending on the job I'm starting) and set them on the kitchen table, or on the living room floor to lay parts on.

That's pretty much how I set up. Since my Ex took the oak dinning table I loved, I got back my old 4' round tempered glass top & wrought Iron frame & 4 chairs, more like stools with backs (Bistro Style). I cover the glass 1st with a silicone cover cut to size. Then a layer of heavy denim material. Finally layer is heavy very tight 100% cotton weave fabric, sage green (so I can see my parts & tools) Then I use my rifle pistol mats. Tool boxes (Large fishing tackle) that I store all my tools (for firearms) Small parts in various sized ziplok bags marked for contents are set on a chair close to me. Then my various gun vices, cleaning stands needed for whatever pistol/rifle I'm working on. All chemicals, lubes and rags/patches is in a separate see-through storage containers that are 'stackable'. And yes, from time to time I do refer to the gunmat IF It's the 'Exact' reference to my firearm. Otherwise, they're just a general ref to location.

I use 1 or 2 microfiber towels to lay out on my coffee table. I have another microfiber that I’ve been using to clean all my firearms for about ten years now. It’s good and filthy full of gun oil and goodness.

Hi,

Mats with the exploded view are kinda gimmicky. The plain ones work just as well. Nevertheless...

;)

Thank you for your indulgence,

Cliff, true that. Logically speaking (minus my Bourbon of course). One disassembling or reassembling a firearm & looking at the 'MAT' as a reference, you'd be using another mat or something to lay the parts on! I don't use the mats for that purpose. I like the mats because of the way they're cushioned. For exploded views of firearms, I use the owner's manuals, or a resource, depending on the date made, like 'NUMRICH', Reference Guide for firearms parts. Or the many online resources that can be printed out.
