Alright, I'm new to this forum but have been shooting for 20 years, handguns, rifles, shotguns, I own and shoot them all.

I have been putting off the purchase of an XD to see if they would come out with a .45ACP and just to see how the reliabilty and durability of the pistol panned out.

So, I get the latest issue of Handguns ragazine which is delivered to my door and what do I see but an article on the XD and a 20,000 round test. If you believe everything you read, the gun did not have a single failure in the 20K, the last 1K + the gun was frozen, submerged in water, buried in mud etc..etc... No failures according to the writter.

So now I'm sufficiently curious and I'm going to by one, they are cheap enough, I've wasted more than $425. on worse things. So anyway.....

I have no experience with the .45GAP. I'd like to try one but I'm also wondering if I shouldn't just go with the old standby .40S&W. I want a 4" gun so I'm leaning .40 because I have a feeling the 880fps they claim from the .45GAP is probably from a 5" barrel.

Who's got experience with the .45GAP? Does this round cause significant muzzle flip? How about ammo availability? How about the availability of the XD chambered for the round. I know they are pretty new. I was in a shop today that had 'em 9mm and .40 but no .45GAP. Makes me wonder.

Here are the velocity figures on the 45 GAP:

45 GAP 230 grain JHP = 880 fps

45 GAP 185 grain JHP = 1000 fps

These are exactly the same as a standard 45 round of equal grain.

I agree that finding the ammo is not as easy as say standard 45.

yeah, I see that. I had already posted when I came across it. It's good to know the guy who wrote it posts here. Sometimes when you read stuff in gun mags you have to wonder if it's BS or the real truth. ie, Springfield advertises in the mag, so we better give them a good review...stuff like that.

Go with the 40. I have one in 40SW and don't wish I had waited for the 45GAP. I already have two 1911s, so I have my 45 caliber fetish covered.

The XD-40 is plenty of handgun. Ammo is more avaialble than the 357sig or 45GAP and with cheaper ammo you'll practice more.
