Got it yesterday afternoon, stripped it for cleaning. Recoil spring came off guide rod.

I have emailed S&W already

Captain obvious says "very important to have that working!!"

Very surprised for a Smith and Wesson?

S&W should take care of ya. Keep us posted.

i'm going to fact check my statement and confirm my statement before I continue my reply..

i'll start off by saying i've had a shield for a few years, i've had countless other m&p's and i've never taken the recoil spring off of the guide rod and I don't think your supposed to but i'm going to check.

Wow I'd be pretty bothered by that, no lie. I love my shields. That's pretty crappy though, sorry bud :(

#1 if you didn't remove the recoil spring from the guide rod you wouldn't be having an issue right now.

It doesn't need to be removed and i'm not trying to bash you but that's just not something you need to worry about on a new Shield.

no need to remove springs
Where did the OP state that they attempted to remove the spring?

Did not try to remove the spring. It was seated poorly, so when trying to seat it better, it flew off.

I've never much cared for their autos. The Sigma was garbage and I'm not going out of my way for a 3rd gen.

The M&P feels good in hand but that's just an atrocious trigger on them.

Old Smith revolvers though. Oh yes. Give me some more of them.

Yep, the M&P has had a lot of quality issues, 9mm accuracy issues, rifling issues, rust issues and yes the trigger is simply awful.

Hell, I'm not that crazy about my 1086.

But, yes indeed I love my dad's wheel guns.

I still need to jump on some of these cheap trade in K frames.

Wish I'd have gotten a 19 a few years back when they were under 500 for very nice guns.
