Hello All,

I hate to bother you with another Failure To Feed problem, but unfortunately I will. I just purchased a new Service XD in .40. I took it to the range today and shot about 150 rounds.

Fifty of them were WWB 180 and the rest were WWB 165. I have the high-cap mags; I shot them loaded with 12 rounds. The slide would not fully return when there were 2 rounds left in the mag, this would also happen less frequently when there were 4 rounds left in the mag. I had the FTF problem with both of the mags that came with the pistol. The problem happened with just about every mag I shot. The bullets seemed to be getting stuck just below the feed ramp.

After I came home I came here and did a search to see what everyone else said about the problem. I am assuming the problem is with the mags. Is this assumption correct? What should I do about it?

At the moment I am also concerned about the feed ramp. When I got home I looked at the feed ramp and it looks like the feed ramp may have been damaged by the FTFs. It looks like the lowest part (and thinnest part) of the feed ramp has been jammed up a bit. I cleaned and oiled the gun before I shot it and did not notice anything with feed ramp. Did I miss something or is there damage to the feed ramp?

Thank you for all of your help.

It appears to me the XD-40 Service is a hit and miss proposition at best. When I bought mine it was constantly having FTF problems. The 3 point kind where the round would lodge halfway up the feed ramp. Anyhow I lost confidence in my gun. I sent it back to Springfield and they polished the feed ramp, polished the breech face performed some work on the slide and re-radiused the chamber. I changed the springs out in my mags with wolf springs. I also installed Dons guide rod with a 22lb spring. Now my XD-40 Service will shoot anything!! WWB JHP's and FMJ's. UMC FMJ's. UMC JHP's. I have complete confidence in my gun now and trust my life to it. It is a great gun when it is properly machined.

Call SA and talk to them, I have found them very nice to work with, but I have only called them once for a question, they may ask you to ship them the gun, if you do have to ship it to them and they fix it they will pay you back for the shipping cost.
thats just what I would do, I'd rather have them try to fix it than me start putting money into the gun.

can you post a picture? XDs have finiky appetites. I was having bad problems shooting Winchester JHPs. They jammed into the feedramp and scuffed it up pretty bad. I switched to Remmington JHPs, and they worked great. Its weird though, I can shoot Winchester FMJ target rounds with no problem...

There should not be any damage to the feed ramp from FTF as the bullet is copper jacketed lead. The feedramp which is part of the barrel is made from hardened steel. I would suggest contacting Springfield about your problem. I would be less than enthusiactic with a weapon that didnt function properly.
