First post here on this forum; I just found you guy earlier today. I picked up a Springfield XD-40 service model earlier this week when Gander Mountain had them on sale with the extra magazine and paddle holster (unfortunately the holster is back order).

Well I gave my new XD-40 the work our Thursday night at the local indoor range. I gave three different rounds a try Remington 155 grain HP, CCI Blazer Brass 165 grain FMJ, and Sellier and Bellot 180 grain FMJ. It ate them all without complaint. I even load all three types mixed in a single magazine and it did just fine with the mixed ammo. I put 170 rounds through it and not one jam, mis-feed or failure to fire.

It shoots fairly accurate, not quite as good as I can do with my 6 ½ inch 357 magnum Blackhawk at the same range but pretty close. It think it had more to due with how much steadier I was with the longer Blackhawk then the actual accuracy of the XD. But after that many rounds I'm sure shell shock was setting in and my forearm was getting a little tired too. I think shooting over a rest it will be even more accurate than I saw shooting free hand at the range.

It also barks really loud, I ended up with plugs and shotgun ear muffs on, my ear muffs alone weren't enough. It makes my 357 magnum seem very tame in the report department. In fact I thought I had accidentally load 38 specials in the 357 magnum when I switched guns. The 155 grain 40 S&W were really hot (500ft-lbs compared to about 400 ft-lbs for the 180 grain) and there was a very visible fireball around the gun and my hands when you fire the lighter bullets.

The forum looks good and I hope to be around for a bit

Thanks

What's the advantage of don's guide rod and spring over the factory one? I have been a hunter and shooter all my life but this is my first centerfire semi-auto handgun so I am sure there are a few thing I have yet to figure out.

Thanks

I was back at the range today (2/13) and put about 150 rounds through the XD-40. I had one failure to feed. It was the last round out of the second magazine full of the session. It appeared the leading edge of the case caught the edge of the chamber. The ammo was Remington UMC 180gr FMJ. Other than that one problem it was another good day at the range. The below picture is on of my better 10rds at 50ft targets. I was standing leaning over my range ammo box set on the bench at the indoor range. The ammo was Sellier & Bellot 180 FMJ. That a 3 inch target spot and about a 5 inch group although I know I flinched anticipating recoil on the low left shot. The gun will shoot now I just have to learn to shoot it.

My groups get about twice that size when I'm not leaning over the bench. Still can't shoot it like I can my Blackhawk but I'm getting close.

Thanks

Aahh, the joys of combat accuracy.

Your Blackhawk will always group better, it's a hunter. Probably has a longer barrel than your XD. The targets you posted show very good groups IMO. The XD is a combat pistol, so if hit center mass or near it, you're OK.
