Its just like sanding wood, you have to sand it, but with wet dry paper or a wet stone until you get below the offending marks. As you go, you move to finer and finer grit until your at like 1200 paper. Then just move onto a polishing wheel using jewlers rouge.
My suggestions would be like this...
400
600
800
1200
polishing wheel
You may not have to start off that course, I dont know what your barrel looks like but it shouldnt take much time with any of the grits to get what you want.

orbital? sander with 1000 grit for 20 minutes did it for me. Then hit it with some white rouge on the polishing wheel and it looks purdy

i went back over mine with a light grian sandpaper to give it a brushed look, then did the same to my clipdraw, like it, looks nice.
