I have well over 1000 rounds in each of my XD's and have yet to disassemble and clean the magazines. Should I? There's little or no evidence of soot collecting about the follower.
I've never broken them down to field strip them. But, when I clean the gun (after the range, when I'm bored at home, etc.), I'll usually unload the mags and wipe the feed with a cloth to get the GSR off it. Then I'll wipe the outside of the mag with the silicone rag after I reload the mag. But that's just so I can spend more time cleaning my gun. I'm always soo sad when I have to pack up my cleaning kit.
I shoot USPSA every weekend. It never fails when I do a reload during a stage that my changed mag will always fall in the only mud puddle or sand box around. So yes I end up cleaning my mags pretty often.
