all my shootn days, I have always believed in the +P 124gr 9mm, now have to consider that JHP's may be restricted by the new socialist govt.,so....ball ammo = .45
1911 not an option for me. My question is how are the older 5" models compared to the newer Xd's? any issues with the 45's? especially the older models.
Thanks to all replies.

I'm a long time Glock owner, but recently purchased a XD .45ACP Service model with the thumb safety & really like it a lot.I know several people who own the tactical model & they have voiced no complaints. The 5" Tactical XD in .45ACP is the choice of Clint Smith of Thunder Ranch & you can't hardly get a better endorsement than that.

I've been big on 9mm myself for years as well, but am becoming a convert to the larger calibers.Reason being that I recently had a conversation with Massad Ayoob who told me he liked the .45 ACP during cold climates where people will be dressed in heavy clothing which may cause hollow points to not expand reliably by plugging up the slug.I live in a "four seasons"climate,so I thought it a good idea to add a .45 ACP.

I chose a XD over a Glock 21 because I liked the addition of a thumb safety & I prefer a fully supported chamber in the larger calibers.

technically, the "OLD" style XD's are without thumb safety's.

I own the XD .45 5" compact tactical.. great handling piece. you may use the compact 10 rd mag for conceal carry , or just everyday use. the full size 13 round mag give the XD a full size grip. both mags come with the compact tactical.

So your saying that a XD without a thumb safety is old.

I have the Tactical and the Compact and love them both. I carry the Tactical on-duty and the compact when off.

I do believe only the tactical come s with the thumb safety at this time. The XD45C is an awesome weapon. Your grandpa will enjoy it:cool:

VR4 -- The XD .45 service model comes in several variations. The one I purchased recently is the model XD9661hcsd, which has a thumb safety and two 13 rd mags. I may be mistaken, but I think only a couple of the service and tactical model versions are equipped with a thumb safety. For the most accurate info just check the springfield - armory website.

You can get a Thumb Safety on either a .45 ACP 4" Service or a 5"Tactical(Black or Bitone) standard XD only. It's not available on any other caliber or the M models at this time. The thumb safety was added when the Military was playing around with the idea of replacing the Beretta M9 with a .45 ACP and the Military's Joint Pistol description requirement calls for a manual safety.

Monkey Boy is right.

The Thumb Safety is an OPTION on these models of XD's.

They still make the XD's without a Thumb Safety and they are NEW. Just because an XD doesn't have the Thumb Safety doesn't mean it is an older version.

I could be wrong but I read the original post that mentioned an old XD to mean one of the first ones to come out. I believe he might have meant the HS2000 ones.

I could be wrong...................I usually am! :)

but the HS2000 was 9mm only, there was no 45 ACP HS2000s.

You can't go wrong with any of the XD.45's. I personally own the compact, and carry the weapon all the time, very concealable and plenty of stopping power.;)

I just got my first xd/45 and I love it, beats the old 1911 by a long shot.
I could never hit a bull in the butt with old 1911, even in Marine corp, just did qualify with it. I shot almost a ragged one hole group at 25 yrds with the xd
