So for you guys who carry concealed on a regular basis, how do you handle your gun when you have to sit down on a toilet in a public restroom? Probably not great idea to "flash" folks in neighboring stalls with your gun dangling from your belt, but many typical stalls also don't have a good place to put the gun/holster even if you could easily take it off.

So, what's the best practice, other than carrying using an ankle holster, which isn't practical for many folks and many guns?

Easy, don't use public restrooms. I will use them for #1 but never for #2

Usually I just sit. Everything is fine behind closed door.

You know how every bathroom has one of those hooks for your coat? I usually un-holster it and hang it off of that. Its fun to see if you can balance the butt of the gun upwards so the hook is right on the trigger!

Joke BTW

Take the end handicapped stall. The throne sits pretty far away from the other ones.
+1. There was actually an article on this issue in one of my Concealed carry mags. If you PM me your email address I'll scan it in and send it to you or I'll give you the jist. NEVER USE A STALL NEXT TO CHILDREN! They have a habit to talk and if they even see it, everyone will know you're carrying. Try to use a stall that has a wall on the side you are carrying. Also, never take your gun out of it's holster while going to the bathroom, even at home because you'll form the habit of taking it out and when you do that you risk it falling or leaving it behind. It sounds stupid, but it's happened.

I try to get the stall against the wall, which is also usually the handicapped stall. There you can relax and not forget about it unless you have a senator next to you who's peeking! Just kidding! If that is not an option, I usually hold my pants up around my knees and spread my legs enough so they don't want to fall down. Hope this helps, it takes practice.

I'm glad to hear some of you can control you bodily functions so well. For the rest of us who spend a large part of time away from home, the reality is that sometime you have to take care of business away from home.

As has been mentioned, a handicap stall is your best choice. If the handicap one is in use, try to take one that is against a wall so there can only person on one side of you. If the TP holder is an aluminum type you can rest you gun on that while you do what you need to do. Don't get too self-conscious. No one is really checking to see who is carrying in the restroom.

Just make sure you leave the stall with all the hardware you entered with.

Good question.

When possible, sit all the way at the end with your strong side (gun side) against the wall and thus out of reach / sight.

Don't take your weapon off or your gun belt off. I've seen duty belts left behind hanging on the coat rack. I've seen radios left behind. It turns out cops, despite what some think, are human too and make mistakes.

I tucked my boxers over the grip (which is all that really shows) the one time I had to drop a deuce in a public restroom.

i just read all the different ways and i still think mine is the best. it doesn't rely on any particular stall, nobody can see it, and if you forget, there will be a reminder in your a$$ lol.

This is priceless. Scary thing is there is a person somewhere that does carry that will probably do this. I just set it on the tp holder or grab rail if possible. Trust me, this is one of the few things i'll never forget. I do try my best to not drop the kids off at the public pool, but it sure beats crap'n yourself.

+2.... I was going to post the same thing. This method really works when I actually decide to wear any kind of pants!

Ever wonder how concealed carry works in a nudist colony?

Same here... I read somewhere on another forum from a guy that laid it on the TP dispenser and walked out without their gun, scary thought.

>don't use public restrooms.

Unfortunately I was ill the day my sensei was teaching the "iron sphincter" exercise. However, I did attend the "steel jaws" training so when I must sit I simply unholster my XD and slip it sideways between my teeth, clamping down firmly on the slide sides. This has the dual advantage of being quickly available when a BG kicks in the stall door (as happens so often in movies), and is much safer than chomping down on a cartridge during a "power dump"....I really need to eat more bran.

I take my pistol out of the holster, put it in my pocket carefully, then reholster once I'm standing up - Handicap stalls are great for this as you can wash your hands before reholstering.

One of the british PM's bodyguards left their piece "on the loo" (britishspeak for potty) at Starbucks:

Tony Blair's bodyguard suspended after leaving loaded gun on toilet floor of Starbuck's coffee shop | UK security | The Sun |News

TONY Blair’s blundering bodyguard left a deadly loaded pistol in full view of coffee shop customers and their children.
The semi-automatic Glock 17 remained on the floor of the Starbucks cafe’s only toilet for nearly 20 minutes.
The bodyguard, a girl cop who is the former PM’s close protection officer, left it there after spending a penny while on duty.
It was eventually found by a horrified Starbucks employee, who called 999.

Lethal ... Glock 17 pistol that was left in Starbucks toilet

Armed police rushed to the cafe to recover it.
Linked

Meanwhile the high-flying officer, in her 30s and wearing plain clothes, was searching frantically for the gun after realising her mistake.
She spent nearly an hour trying to retrace her steps.
The pistol was eventually linked to her when cops compared its serial number to those logged at a police armoury.
Scotland Yard chiefs hit the roof. And the bodyguard, whose job is to protect Mr Blair from al-Qaeda terrorists, has been “removed from operational duties”.

A senior police source said last night: “She knows she has messed up bad.” The officer, attached to the Yard’s crack SO1 protection unit, was caught short while on Edgware Road, Central London — near one of Mr Blair’s homes.
She took off a belt holding the Glock while she relieved herself in the Starbucks toilet — used by men and women, boys and girls.
After leaving the loo the absent-minded cop stopped to buy a coffee and then walked out — completely forgetting she had left the gun behind.
The police source said: “Luckily it was found in time, but if a child or a criminal had picked it up there could have been terrible consequences.
“This has come as a shock. The officer is inconsolable and seriously regrets her mistake.”
The source added: “Everyone is fond of her.
“She was among the top in her class during training, but her firearms career could be over.”
Armed female cops have been griping for years about the bulky design of their gun belts. Male officers do not need to remove theirs to spend a penny — but the girls do.
The source said no decision has been made about the bodyguard’s long-term future.
Her SO1 unit — full name Specialist Protection Command — is responsible for the personal safety of Prime Minister Gordon Brown and ex-PMs Mr Blair and Margaret Thatcher.

Protected ... Blair's guards use Glock 17 pistols

It also guards Cabinet ministers, ambassadors and high-profile individuals who are considered terrorist targets.
Scotland Yard said last night: “A police-issue firearm was left unattended in a central London cafe.
Traced

“The weapon belongs to a Metropolitan Police authorised firearm officer who was on duty at the time. An investigation has begun.
“We have traced the officer concerned and the officer has been removed from operational duties pending the investigation.”
The Starbucks bungle is the second security blip faced by Middle East envoy Mr Blair since he left Downing Street.
Last September four asylum seekers got into the UK in the back of a lorry delivering Mr Blair’s new £100,000 reinforced BMW from Munich.
They were discovered when the doors of the transporter were opened at a police garage in Vauxhall, South London.
