I woudln't think that these are two normally compared. The 229 is not a compact gun. The first gun I owned was a 229 which was an absolutely great gun but bills forced me to sell. I have since bought a xd for about half of what the 229 cost me. I was told that the full size xd and the 229 are pretty close in size.

Not to mention the weight of 229 being quite a bit more than an XD.

the 229 is 1.5 " wide and I could not find the width listed on the xdm. In my opinion if you can afford a 229 and don't mind the size then you can't go wrong. There are a few things I like better about the xd's which is the safety features. The 229 does not have the grip or trigger safety. It is DA. With my xd I feel safer with it around my son. I don't think you can go wrong with either one though.

could someone measure the thickness of the xdm for me?

also i as looking up the height of the p229/226 and the p226 is only .1 inches taller? is this correct? it holds three more rounds with that .1 inch?
