Has anyone ever shortened a grip frame? A la Robar's shortening of a glock frame to accept a smaller magazine. I have received my chl and I am currently planning on adding an SC to my Tactical.

But I thought if anyone does the mod it would be great to take a service model and shorten the grip to SC length to accept those magazines. You would get the shorter grip, which for me has been the most difficult part to hide, and the longer sight radius of the 4" barrel.

Any thoughts or experiences?

To my knowledge, this has not yet been completed successfully with the XD line of handguns. I have seen Bowie Tactical Concepts' work with removing bits of the bottom of the grip to allow for a forcible removal of the magazine in the cases of a feed-way stoppage or a stuck mag.

If you find something like this that has actually worked I would certainly like to know about it maybe a link or something.

David Bowie did it to accept some S&W mags that were shorter.
True, I had forgotten about that. Although he also noted that it was a one of a kind and it was not a service he was going to offer to customers.

I had seen a thread asking if SA sold frames by themselves, that would seem to be the way to go about the project. I don't see myself buying a service model and trying it.

But man if they did sell the frames I sure would try it. The 4" barrel is great but the grip is the same size as my Tactical. I wish that SA had a medium grip length similar to a glock 19/23.

Actually I believe another forum member had contacted and talked to Dave about having a 4" cut down to accept subcompact mags. I dont know what the price was or who the member was, but dave said it was possible I believe.

My gun should be coming back from BTC this week. I cant wait to see the results.

In theory, if you can use a full-size mag in the SC, cutting down the grip on a Service/Tactical to use SC mags should not be a problem. The magazine is secured by the release catch and merely stabilized by the frame, so grip length is irrelevant.

Until I shot my friend's SC, I was planning on attempting just this with my Service. Unfortunately, I found the grip on his gun to be too short for my liking, so my CNC mill shall not attempt this task.

this sounds like a cool mod. full sized frame, with a more compact grip. since the grip is a chief complaint while CCing it...this might be something cool to look into.

i'll add my request to those of you who have had this service done (or know someone who has) to show us some pictures. please.

thanks

I like the concept and in fact wrote to Springfield about it some time ago. My reply was that anything is possible and I should stay tuned to the product line.

Now, if this gun is going to be used for carry (obviously from previous comments), I would be hesitant to modify it. Again, I had a meeting with my attorney who very plainly stated that I should use a gun with any modifications - for liability reasons.

My carry weapon - a stock XD40 Service and XD40SC. The only modifications are improved sights... factory installed.
