This is a true account that happened to me. Please do not post comments to this if you are going to call me anything that is unprofessional.

Yesterday I took my beloved Springfield Armory XD 9mm out of my home gun safe to show my wife the gun since she is going to use it to qualify for her concealed carry course. I dropped the magazine and was placing the firearm on the bed, when all of a sudden the firearm went off!

Yes you read that correctly, my beloved XD went off without the trigger being pulled. How did this happen? I do not know. There was absolutely no way that the trigger was pulled.

It shot through our bedroom wall and into our China Cabinet that her grandparents had given to us, no one was hurt but there is a large hole in the wall and China Cabinet. We are blessed that no one was injured in this unfortunate event.

LE was called and a report was completed due to a firearm being fired within city limits. LE examined the firearm and found extensive wear on the firearm, considering the fact that this firearm has less than 200 rounds through it. They compared it to theirs that have had 4-6K rounds through them and the wear on theirs was very even and on mine there was rough ridges on the striker. I am unable to take pictures since I have already sent the firearm off. I did have to replace the striker retainer pin when I first got it because it came from the factory with a broken pin. It was replaced with one that Springfield sent to me.

Springfield was called and the Customer Support was very helpful and setup everything for a quick return to the repair shop. They said they should get to it within 2 weeks. I hope sooner so I learn what they found to be wrong with it.

I hope I can continue to be a loyal supporter of Springfield Armory and their XD line of products. I almost purchased a XDM 40 earlier in the week and am holding off on buying it until I hear from them on this incident.

Any thoughts on what could of caused this? And do not say pulling the trigger!

Did you have anything in your reaction hand?
Sorry guns dont fire without a trigger being pulled or some violent action like slammed to the ground. Was this gun modified? do you have pics of the incident?
Sorry but there is virtually no way that the gun can go off without pulling the trigger, that is unless you or somebody else has been messing with the trigger mechanism.
No, my reaction hand was empty.

The only modification that was done was the stock magazine release was replaced with an extended one and some stippling was done to the handle, otherwise stock.
Glad no one was hurt. It should be interesting to see what happens with this.
I need to see some pics for this one, sir.
So do you have any theories on how it went off by itself? The XD has a striker plate that requires the grip safety AND the trigger safety to be disengaged at the same time. When you say "placing it on the bed", what exactly do you mean? Was it laying on the bed with no one touching it? Was it still in your hand? Just trying to understand. I carry an XD9 and would like to know more about how it happened.
I honestly can't think of anything that would cause it to discharge. Other than some way some how when you leaned over to put it down you contracted your finger and. It somehow went inside the trigger guard. Modern firearms even worn out ones will not fire unless something depresses the trigger. Or your xd is haunted

The firearm was in my hand and I was setting it done, the grip safety was engaged. There is absolutely no way that I pulled the trigger. I have been drilled that you never place your finger on the trigger until you have your target insight and are going to shoot the target.

I was sitting on my bed, my gun safe is under my night stand. I was not walking around or moving. I pulled the firearm out of the safe, took the magazine out and was sitting it down when it discharged.

Believe me I will. I have always recommended Springfield's products.
wierd seems like a lemon if it really has that much wear

Can you post links to the others?
You said the officer's told you the pistol had considerable wear did you buy it new? I've never heard of one new having a broken pin. I've seen machine defects in a new weapon but that usually results in miss feeds, fail to cycle, and light pin strikes things of that nature.
