I practice carrying it around the property daily and holstering/unholstering. Loaded mag, but none in the chamber. I have always been good at holding the trigger finger outside the trigger guard, used to do some roleplay with a replica handgun...

Haven't gotten the nerve up to chamber a round yet, but will try the cocked/unloaded chamber approach to see if anything dry fires it at all.

Lots of practising safety here, if I am to get that FL nonres permit for PA carrying, I need to know 100% what I am doing.

As to criminals reading body language, I made a group of thugs leave me alone once LOL- of course the dog REALLY helped, but dammit I stared those teens down. I tend to go into a warrior mode when really pushed. Geeze, don't be a scumbag and get me mad!

you managed to get a permit to carry in MD? Wow, I'm in awe :p

My first few times out, i didn't carry loaded chamber. After about the first day, to day and a half, its been chambered and ready to go. I have 100% confidence in my equipment. A gun that isn't chambered isn't a gun, it's an ammo storage device...Have confidence in your gear, and have confidence in your abilities and you'll be fine.

Explain just how you plan on unintentionally firing.

The ONLY way to fire your XD is to place your booger hook on the bang lever and pull the bang lever. So if you just keep your booger hook off the bang lever you will have no problems.
HAHHAH +1

I warmed up to the idea of carrying a 'hot' weapon by racking the slide so the striker indicator was out. then inserted a mag and carried like that a couple weeks.

the striker never dropped, so no 'discharge' into the leg would've occured.

the gun would have to mechanically fail on multiple levels for it to launch a round into your leg, provided you don't pull the trigger drawing or holstering it.

Shikkie, read it again- I ONLY carry at my house, business and to and from, as business is next to the house! This is legal in MD without any permit. I refer to it as practicing because I am considering the FL nonres which is accepted in PA and I live a mile from the PA/MD line.

So far I have been carrying the XD in a holster, mostly the shoulder one I made, striker pin is still out, so it hasn't gone and dry fired all by itself LOL. Yes I do holster and unholster a few times a day.

I saw "Carry" and "MD" and my brain overloaded LOL! I live right close to MD and I'm quite frustrated that I can't drive through legally w/o stashing it away :(

i was a little weirded out about having one in the pipe for a few days. My Mossberg is loaded 5+1 with 3" magnum 00 buck. near it is the XD, loaded up and +1. i dont think anything of it now. with a decent holster it will be fine. my federal holsterworks holster was cheap but it functions very well. covers the trigger and even the mag release. there is NO way its going to AD.

i find it odd that everyone talkes about the saftey specs, but then anyone is nervous to trust them...

I carry +1 all the time... and open. (ccw coming later, but will still carry open)....

duality.... nice to see you here ;)

A lot of GREAT advice here:

If you lack confidence in the safety of your gun, carry without a round in the chamber.
If you haven't had any training other than what is required to get your permit (which can vary GREATLY) spend a little money to get some proper training. It will build your confidence.
Learn and practice trigger discipline, ALL THE TIME. It will create muscle memory over time.
A respected firearms instructor out here on the West Coast stated:

"If you do not carry a round chambered, you have a ammo storage device, not a gun."
When you get comfortable with it, it will seem normal. Don't let anyone "bully" you into something you aren't mentally prepared for.

GOOD GOD!!!!!! Look, I'm not going to read through all of the posts, but PLEASE....for the LOVE OF GOD....stop saying booger hook and bang lever. That is so galactically freakin' stupid and overused that I want to shoot my GD computer ever time I see it.

That would be a deliberate discharge.

Done by placing the booger hook on the bang lever and squeezing.

Am I the only one that saw this?!?!?
I think I'm in love :wink::wink::wink:

Once I was super gluing some stuff and I got my booger hook stuck to my bang lever. I tried for hours to get my booger hook unstuck from my bang lever but to no avail. I went to the hospital to get a professional to get my booger hook unstuck from my bang lever but they said I needed a booger hook bang lever specialist so I looked in the yellow pages under........"specialists", but no booger hook bang lever entries, so I just used some booger hook bang lever remover I found at Wal-Mart.
I'm ok now, in love but ok. ;) ;) ;)

As there is no active/manual safety on the XD, you've been carrying it cocked and unlocked. But anyway - a good holster and some training, as well as the proper mindset, and you'll be good to go. :)
