I have heard many references to the "captive" rods of the 3" and 4" XD's vs the usual rod and spring configuration used on the 5" models. Besides the obvious visual/construction differences, what are the mechanical differences and advantages/disadvantages with either system? Keep in mind, I realize that the rod and spring setup of the 5" models can be replaced and/or upgraded, while the captive system cannot (upgrade). But, other than this, why go with one vs the other? Is it not possible to use the same rod+spring setup, found on the 5" Tactical, for the 3" and 4" guns? If not, why? I aim this question mainly at Springfield Armory.

Personally, I would have opted for the 5" Tactical XD had I known this stuff before. But, frankly, I think the 4" Service just "feels" better and more balanced than any of the other models I tried out. Its unfortunate that the only XD-45 that allows for any real options is the 5" Tactical model. Hopefully this will change in the very near future.

Either way, its absolutely ridiculous that this is even an issue. It seems as if, for those of us who actually feel like upgrading our firearm(s), we are left with only ONE option...the Tactical XD. Its stupid......

The only disadvantage with the captive spring system is that it is the only one I have heard of having the frozen slide issue. I haven't yet heard any reports of the 5" xds having the same issue. Btw I have the 4" XD-45. I haven't had any of the slide locking issues with mine, but I always put the guide rod in aligned correctly.

I have a 4"c and a 5". I had the frozen slide problem from a misaligned guide rod in my 4" but never in the 5". I ended up having to beat the slide off of the frame with a rubber mallet when i got it stuck... it was a real pain.

Embarrassed to say that I though my 5" had the captive rod, but upon reflection the only XD's I had shot before getting mine were 4" models. Should have known.
