So, is the XD9 convertable (via a new barrel) to .40 and .357SIG? I have seen and heard of ppl doing a caliber conversion with the XD40 and XD357, but wasn't entirely sure if it was possible with the XD9. I (my wife) just got a SCXD9 "lunchkit" at the gunshow yesterday.

Must be that the 9mm frame isn't beefed up enough to handle what a .40 S&W or a .357 Sig will put it through. Check out pistol-gear.com If you want to swap barrels you have to start out with a .40 and then order the stuff from Pistol Gear to shoot .357 Sigs and 9mm's.

Actually, you can go from 9mm to .40 cal/.357SIG but you have to buy a new .40 cal slide to go with the barrel (and a new magazine). It's not that things aren't "strong enough" it's that the breechface is too small to fit the larger cartridge base. The .40 S&W and the .357SIG have the same size base so you can switch between these 2 calibers by just changing barrels (magazines are the same).
To go down to 9mm from .40 or up to .40 from 9mm requires a new slide, barrel, and magazine but you can do it. You should also get the appropriate slide recoil spring.

I thought that you could go down from .40 to 9 with the same slide...

This is not 100% accurate. With a 9mm conversion barrel, you use your XD-40 or XD-357 slide. You can also use the same mags, however some may need to be modified if the feedlips are out a bit.

Dozens of guys have purchased the EFK FireDragon barrels and are running them in such a manner, with no issues from what I know.

"Information speweth?" That's a good one!
Anyway, I still maintain that you cannot (properly) go down to 9mm from .40 using the same slide. The breechface is larger and the most likely problem is that the extractor will not properly grip the case rim. This can lead to "failures to extract." I'm not saying that it won't "go bang" but you will be working with misfit parts and risk reliabilty.
Ex.: You can fire a .22 LR in a .22 Mag. chamber and it will shoot but look what happens...

You are correct. CaptainBob was doing pretty well until the end of his post, then the misinformation speweth. ;)

Okay, so me and another user on this forum are toying with the idea of trading frames. He has an XD-9 and I have an XD-40, both are 4" service models. I have a OD green frame that he wants. He has a black frame that I want. Can we swap just the frames (keeping our own barrels, slide, magazines) without having to worry about malfunction or damage? I've emailed Springfield about it, but I'm pretty sure I know what their response will be.

P.S. If you have a black .40 and want a green .40 let me know. :D

Does it matter that the serial#s won't match up? The frame has a serial number on it that matches the barrel. right?

You could run into problems with teh ATF or LOCAL LE if they SN do not match on the gun and it gets stolen!?!?!?
The SN is on the slide and the Frame!
Nope, the only number/part that matters is the frame. For example, lots of folks build their own 1911 pistols, the frame must be obtained through FFLs; slide, barrels, etc can come direct from anyone.

I believe that there might be some machine cuts on the 9mm slide that are different (larger?) than those on the .40 slide. This allows the 9mm slide to fit the .40 frame, but not the reverse. It's not something really obvious, without getting out some machine dye and getting real detailed about it, I can't tell you exactly what the interference is. But I don't think the exchange you're looking to do will work.

The actual problem is that the .40 slide will only go about 2/3 of the way onto the 9mm frame. This is with the barrel removed, so it's not part of the barrel that causing the interference.

Sorry, both of my .40 frames are OD, and I like them that way :)

I agree. The determining factor for the caliber is the barrel AND THE SLIDE. If he keeps these (and the magazine so it doesn't have to be modified), he can swap frames.
The "rule of thumb" is that you can change calibers by changing only a barrel if the cartridge base is the same. If the cartridge base is larger OR SMALLER) you need to change slides also.
