my dad has (what i think) is an early AR/M16 butt stock (kinda round shiny black)
if he were to want a collapsible one , would i have to swap out the buffer tube, or are they interchangeable ?

Yes, if it is a normal [email protected] rifle stock, you need a new buffer tube. Yes the new tube is shorter, but it is what gives you the 6 positions.. or 4 or 5 or whatever. you will also have to swap to a carbine buffer because the A2 buffer is too long for a carbine tube. New carbine tube, buffer, and I am pretty sure spring.

Yes, everything will need to be replaced in the system Tube, Spring, Buffer, and Stock. Also, be careful when you pull the old one off as there is a spring held into place by the stock that works with the rear take-down pin.
